Grant Approved
For Regional
Bus Services
The U.S. Department of Transpor
tation has approved 8*77,115 grant
for planning and marketing a
regional bus service in Wake,
Durham and Orange counties.
The N.C. Board of Transportation
authorized submittal of an applica
tion on behalf of Raleigh Transporta
tion Service at its June 10 meeting.
To receive funding from the federal
government, RTS had to receive the
support of a public agency-in this
caw the state of North Carolina.
Eventually, the service provided by
RTS will connect Raleigh, Durham,
Cary, Research Triangle Park,
RaWgh-Durham Airport and Chapel
HOI. Currently, only limited transpor
tation service linking the major
destinations in the region is available
through intercity bus services provid
ed by Greyhound and Trailways.
Funds provided by the USDOT grant
will permit the development of ex
panded service.
Operational planning and
marketing funded by the grant
represents the first phase of the two
phase program. The second phase
will be the initiation of the aririittnnai
bus service and extensive marketing
of the service.
The grant funds announced last
weak will be used over a six-month
period. Phase two of the program will
extend over a 24- to 36-month period.
RTS will not be subsidized by the
state. It will seek to cover operating
costs through its fare collections.
State and local planners will be
working with RTS to help develop
routes and schedules for this
transportation service.
Transportation Secretary Jim Har
rington said that the work that will
take place under the grant is consis
tent with Gov. Jim Martin’s efforts to
develop a comprehensive transporta
tion program for the state. “The
governor realizes that intercity ser
vices like the ones this grant will
develop will play a vital role in
masting our transportation needs. As
North Carolina’s cities and towns
continue to grow the alternatives pro
vided by public transportation will
gain importance. This grant combin
ed with the many other elements of
our Transportation Improvement
Program ' will help to strengthen
North Carolina as it prepares to meet
the challenge of future
development. ’ ’

A. Boil mixture for a full minute,
timing carefully. Too little cooking
prevents starch from reaching its full
thickening power. Overcooking
breaks down the starch. Add acid
type flavorings, such as lemon juice,
after mixture has thickened. Acid can
inhibit thickening.
