Wedeyau in 1987 has been named
a Modes Scholar.
Isaac Shongwe, president of his
class at Wesleyan and captain of
the soccer team, was one of five
students from Connecticut col
leges to be named winners of
Rhodes scholarships to Oxford
University on Sunday. The other
lour were all from Yale.
“The honor that goes along
'with it [the Rhodes scholarship]
has given me the courage to
rededicate my commitment to
the struggle,” said Shongwe, 26.

mitted to school, he had to walk

by age;15 learned English,

adoptol by an Englishman who
: brought him to England, where
he attended a private school.

troduced to Steven B. Pfeiffer, a
{ member of Wesleyan's Board of
Trustees. Pfeiffer brought
Shongwe to the attention of
Wesley a n'-officia Is.
Following' his graduation
Shongwre. worked at the Riggs Na
tional Bank In Washington, D.C.
' before returning to South Africa.

Operation Exodus Allows 4,990 Fort Gordon -
Soldiers To Go Home For Holidays
FORT GORDON, Ga — Pvt.
Michael A. Anderson of Company A,
369th Signal Batalion of the 15th
Signal Brigade joined more than 4,990
Fort Gordon soldiers Dec. (7
returning home for the holidays to
their families and loved ones.
The soldiers are students
completing advanced military
training in one of the 31
communications specialties at the
U.S, Army Signal Center near
Augusta, Ga.
Approximately 3,550 soldiers
traveled to nearly every state, the
Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico
for the 15-day Christmas holiday. The
remainder left the Army post for new
duty assignments or remained at the
school during the training break.
Nearly 750 of those leaving
returned home on commercial
airlines or a special charter plane.
Approximately 1,170 rolled home in
personal cars or chartered buses
that left Fort Gordon at sunrise Dec.
17.
The annual departures, called
“Operation Exodus," permit the
Signal Center’s soldiers to join their
families before continuing intensive
