Burns, director of the Life Member ship Department for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, spoke Friday at the annual Freedom Awards Banquet of the Jackson NAACP Branch "We must change the direction of the Republican Party so it will not be the party of white exclusivism," Burns said. “The ultimate question is not if the Billy Moungers and Trent Lotts can be changed," he said, referring to Mounger, a Jackson GOP activist, and Lott, the state's Republican U S. senator-elect. "The question is when will we begin to cfy^nge them. They don't know us. and we don’t know them." Burns angered some Mississippi Prestige Club Holds Yuletide Activities Here BY THELMA M. KECK The Prestige Club of Raleigh ushered the yuletide season in with a party at the Hargett Street YWCA on Dec 15. President Margaret Capehart welcomed the guests and members of the club. Mildred James delivered the meditation, including a very fervent prayer for peace, happiness, and goodwill for all. Dorothy Goodson was the chairman of the Christmas activities. Nettie Thompson sang "0 Holy Night' and Jimmy Keck directed the singing of other familiar songs of the season. Highlights included an abundance of good food, plenty of fun and warm fellowship Games were played and gifts and cards were exchanged. The guests who won prizes were Paul Thompson. Lucile Paige, Grace Hall. Catherine Quick. Beulah Jones. Faye Tucker, Mary Curtis and Cornelia Haywood. By using that technology, a student or parent can find out very quickly just where the money is that they qualify to receive.” As college costs continue to in crease and federal aid gets tougher to qualify for, private grants and scholarships are going to play a larger role in helping parents and students find the means to cope with those tuition payments. Perhaps Mr. Reagan will get his wish and begin seeing more private money take the place of federal assistance.
