VOICE
(OifKIlMririffrom page 4)
of information called teaching is not as simple as it looks.
Because children are in a classroom we cannot assume
that they are being taught. Because teachers are teaching
to the best of their abilities we cannot assume that all
children are learning or that if they aren’t it is because
they can’t or are poor or that teachers aren’t being nice to
them. What we can say is that if they aren’t learning the
teaching methods are inappropriate to them and need to be
changed. How dare I say that? Well, because at the point
Uut children enter school they have already learned more
and at a greater rate than most of them will learn for the
rest of their lives (information that they have been able to
gather without a lot of effort on our part). They’ve learned
to walk, talk, mark on paper, stand, sit and crawl* all dif
ficult tasks that have come from somewhere inside them
and that prove that they can learn.
Thev have learned these tasks by (1) being developmen
tal^ ready (somethingadults can’t control), (2) by obser
ving others around them, and (3) by having their efforts
positively responded to and through reward and en
couragement. Some of these factors are not appropriately
addressed in our classrooms. Especially for children who
are poor, racially different and often sexually different
than the majority of adults in the system. For this reason,
black males have a particularly difficult time in our soh-iol
system. If you have either of these differences you are at
risk andif you have all three, the chances are that you will
fail or not reach your potential in our system of education.
How, one might ask? I still don’t understand how. It
starts with a belief system. If we believe that people who
are born poor are poor because they are lazy then when we
attempt to teach something to a child who is poor and they
don’t learn it immediately, we may conclude that they
haven’t learned it not because we didn’t address it from
their experience but because they are lazy. If we believe
that black people are inferior educationally and we try to
teach them something from a white cultural experience,
we might assume that they didn’t learn it because they and
the’r culture are inferior. If we believe that black males
are more aggressive and potentially harmful to us we will
notice their behavior more and when they walk intoour
classrooms with what may be a proud “I am somebody”
walk, fills may be perceived as a swagger and “I’m out to
get you” walk that has to be dealt with and punished before
you get me.
These perceptions of poverty, race, and sexuality are
points not only to believe from but also to operate from and
often, too often, they are self-fulfilling prophesies. Yes, we
can elicit behavior from other people, especially children.
Kids tell me that teachers look at their work and comment
on other children’s work. They say that if they give an
answer in class the teacher says uh-huh but ask the same
question of another student and when they give the same,
answer (maybe in another way), this child’s response is
commented on with a whole sentence. “Good thinking,
Jane, that’s an excellent answer.”
One of the reasons I find that there are more children of
African descent in special placements such as EMH, etc.,
is that these children are often referred more for testing.
Unfortunately, our children are not used to discover the
norms for the test they are given, therefore they may be
more apt to not do as well on them. In addition, it has been
said by some that children of different cultures learn dif
ferently and if their style of learning is not addressed, they
will do poorly.
Why, someone might ask, is it that when the Depart
ment of Civil Bights comes to look for discrimination, they
appear not to find it? The answer is simple. What they are
doing is (1) randomly looking at records (they don’t look at
all records); (2) they are really looking to see if forms are
in place and generally they find that they are, however
forms don’t discriminate, people do; (3) they do not look to
evaluate whether or not objectives are appropriate, just
rather to see if stated objectives are met. In other words, a
paper trial normally doesn’t produce discriminatory prac
tices. Let’s face it, people who discriminate generally don’t
write it down.
When interviewed from time to time about
discriminatory practices, examples that are to me obvious
are questioned rather than accepted. This seems
somewhat illogical to me. If I’ve been a victim of
discrimination and you haven’t, it seems that I would be
more likely to know what discrimination feels like. A case
in point, when I was teaching two black male students
came to me and told me that their white social studies
teacher said to the class that black people would never
measure up, could never make the SAT scores that white
people could, etc. When I went to talk to her about it, she
was appalled that I didn’t agree with her. When I suggested
that we compare SAT and NTE scores (mine and hers), she
refused and instead went to the principal who called me in
and asked me if I were not just a “little sensitive” about
race. I think when we finished he realized that yes, I was, I
am and rightly so; however, I don’t think at that time that
he recognized who, in fact, owned the problem. The
teacher, however, did later, and wrote an apology. Unfor
tunately, her intellectual understanding did not make for
her a behavioral change.
The final truth is when one’s superiority is maintained
by having someone else stay inferior in their minds or in
their reality, you just can’t expect them to recognize or en
courage equality in the people they feel superior to.
