Fostering Strong Leadership Meredith College: A School Of Distinction Meredith College, a private four-year liberal arts college in Raleigh, enjoys a significant distinction—it is one of only 95 women's colleges in the United States tod v. What’s so special about wi en's colleges, aside from tin fact that they are substantially outnumbered by coeducational institutions? Here are a few interesting facts: tin Business Week’s June ’87 list of the 50 women who are rising stars in corporate America, 15 of them (or 30 per cent) received their college degree from a women’s col lege. •Of the 27 women members of Congress, 12, or 44 percent, attended women's colleges. •One third (33 percent) of the women board members of the 1908 “Fortune 1000” com panies are women’s college graduates. According to Alexander Astin in his book “Four Critical Years,” an authoritative analysis of college en vironments: “Single-sex colleges show a pattern of effects... that is almost uniformaly positive students become more academically involved, in teract with faculty frequently, show large increases in in tellectual esteem, and are more satisfied with practically all aspects of the college ex perience compared with their counterparts in coeducational institutions... Women’s col leges increase the chances that women will obtain positions of leadership, complete the bac calaureate degree, and aspire to higher degrees.” Meredith College is commit ted to fostering strong leader ship skills as part of the total educational experience and points to new studies that show that women’s colleges, in feet, better prepare women for in dependent roles in the work nlace Hmii cnaH m»hiH>ls And Meredith’s small size and 17:1 student-to-feculty ratio also gives students more oppor tunities to take active leader ship rotes in school life, to fora lifelong friendships and to receive maivuniuizea eauca UThe co^se^sas-acre cam pus in west Raleigh is conve nient to the Research Triangle Park and Interstate 40. With 30 majors and u concentrations, Meredith offers bachelors of arte, science and music degrees. Meredith also offers special educational oppor tunities, such as Cooperative Education q»m1 Internships, Meredith Abroad (interna tional study), the NC Teaching Fellows Program and Mission Opportunities. In addition, die John E. Weems Graduate School at Meredith offers master’s degrees in business ad ministration, music and educa tion. Over 230 women are cur rently enrolled in the graduate programs. To assist students with tui tion and costs, Meredith makes available a variety of educa tional scholarships and finan cial assistance, including grants, scholarships, work study, and loans. Over 500 students receive some form of financial assistance at Meredith, and all full-time Meredith students who are legal residents of North Carolina qualify for the North Carolina Legislative Tuition Grant. Yvette Brown, a senior and the president of the Meredith Stu dent Government Association, says, “Meredith is a fun, kind, and friendly place, but awMhmirs are the key to a bright future. You should take advantage of all it has to offer. You can achieve your goals if you apply yourself here at MereiKth.” Yvette, a mathematics and biology double major, advises to “look at each college in terms of what it can offer, and to consider the opportunities for involvement pie of involvement: she was freshman class president, vice president for the Meredith Association for Black Awareness, and flayed varsity volleyball for two years. But, according to Yvette, one of the most rewarding aspects of her education at Meredith is the in ternship she is now doing in cancer research at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
