Store Furs Carefully lb Avoid Damage In Summer Have you carefully wrapped your fur coat in plastic and stared it m the attic for the summer? If you have, please get it out right now. Furs need to be stored in a cool place and they should never be put in plastic, says Dr. Harriet T. Jen nings, extension clothing specialist at North Carolina State University. Jennings recommends the fol lowing care for furs and garments trimmed with ftir: — Have your furs cleaned by * professional drydeaner with an es tablished reputation for handling furs, using the fur method of drycleaning. This method tumbles the furs in a dry compound with sol vents that remove grease and oil. Furs should be cleaned periodically, usually once every one or two years, , depending on the type of ftir and frequency of wear. Cleaning furs more often removes natural fur oils and that dries out the hide. — During’the off-season have your fur stored in a vault available from a bonded furrier. The control led temperatures of 45-55 degrees F. and controlled humidity in the vault keeps the hides supple and prevents drying. Vault storage also prevents attacks by moths and other insects. Do inspect the storage vault. Furs should not be tightly packed. In addition to stor ing your fur with a bonded fUrrier, review your homeowner s in surance policy to make sure your fUr is fully covered should any damage occur. — If you are storing your furs at home, place them in the coolest closet you have. Put them in paper or cloth garment bags. Never use plMtfc bags. Make sure furs have adequate space around them. Furs need good air circulation to prevent the hides from drying and the hair from becoming crushed and broke n — Hang ftirs on padded wide hangers, and never use wire hangers. Padded wide hangers give support to the shoulders, which are the stress points on a fur coat and susceptible to ripping and cracking. Stoles should be hung crosswise on specially designed hangers with the center back lying across the horizontal arm of the hanger. Shade 'l’rees Benefit From Spring Fertilizer Shade trees-eepecially young, unestablished ones-can benefit from a little care and feeding each spring, North Carolina State University agricultural extension specialists say. Healthy, older trees don’t need fertilizer every year, but the young ones may respond to the extra care. Choose a fertilizer that has two to three times as much nitrogen as it does phosphorus and potassium. Some examples are 15-5-5, 10-6-4 and 12-4-4. Up to half of the nitrogen should be in an organic form, such as cot tonseed meal or tankage. Organic nitrogen is released to the tree slower than chemical forms are. And it provides nitrogen gradually over a longer period. Fertilize trees in early spring. Apply more fertilizer in the early summer, if needed. But don't fertil ize trace in late summer, the NCSU specialists caution. The amount of fertilizer you apply will depend on the tree’s size. Use 2 to 4 pounds of fertilizer for each 6 inches of the tree’s diameter, the specialists say. Trees less than 6 inches in diameter should receive 1 to 2 pounds of fertilizer, lb figure out the diameter, measure the tree trunk 4 feet above the ground. You may apply the fertilizer on the ground surface. Avoid putting it within a foot of the trunk since this could damage the root collar. If your soil is compacted or if grass is growing under the tree, the best way to fertilize is by making holes about 1 to 2 inches wide 2 feet or so from the trunk. Continue every 2 feet all around the tree and slightly beyond the spread of the branches. Then fill the holes with fertilizer.
