F.Y.eyes Proper Precautions Prevent Eye Strain With more than 20 million video display terminals (VDTs) in use in the United States, many Americans now consider themselves “computer friendly”—but the long hours spent staring into a VDT screen may not be so friendly to your eyes. Tail your eye care professional you work with computers. Your eyewear prescription may be ad* Jutted accordingly. Symptoms of computer-related eye strain include headache, eye irritation, redness, soreness, blurred vision, double vision, or seeing a colored edge around objects. Fortu nately, such eye strain can be pre vented with the proper precautions, say experts at the Better Vision Institute: •Get an annual eye exam and tell your eye care professional that you work with a computer. Your eyewear prescription can be cor rected for the distance between yourself and the screen. •Eye exams are especially im portant for identification and cor rection of such vision problems as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (aging eyes), which can add to VDT eye strain. •Take short, frequent breaks from computer work. •Get an adjustable chair that tilts slightly forward and has a back support. Lack of support can cause muscle strain that contributes to eye stress. •Reduce glare from office light ing and natural light from windows. Angle your VDT away from the light. Can Now (919) 792-5781 ___ Area Elementary Schools To Offer Study Skills The Fuller Elementary School PTA and the Underwood Elementary School PTA will offer a workshop titl ed “Homework: A Parent’s Survival Guide.” This one- to two-hour pro gram, presented by the Huntington Learning Center, was developed in response to growing parental concern over weak study skills and poor homework habits. “Homework is a vital element of an education. The work students do at home reinforces what they learn at school, ” says Darla Miller of the Hun tington Learning Center in Raleigh. “Many students never acquire ade quate study habits... sometimes the quality of the homework doesn’t reflect the student’s best work, or it takes all night to get assignments done, or the child will wait until the very last minute... there are many symptoms of poor study skills. And with understanding and commit ment, these skills can be strengthen ed.” For an example, at “Homework: A Parent’s Survival Guide,” parents are told that they, together with their child, should define mutually accep table goals and expectations. “You can’t expect a child to achieve a goal that is not clearly defined,” Miller stated. “Simply saying ‘Do your homework’ may not be sufficient direction for some students.” The seminar will be presented at Fuller Elementary on Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m. and at the Under wood Elementary School, Friday, March 8, at 9:15 a.m. Admission is free. For more information on the program or on the Huntington Learn ing Center, call Darla Miller at 782-8115. * * * The character played by Humphrey Bogart in “Casablanca” never once said, “Play it again, Sam.” He actually told the piano player, “You played it for her, you can play it for me.” Weaver Bros. 4409 Capital DM.
