Hummingbirds Attracted by Bright Flowers in Garden Over the next few months, many North Carolina gardeners will get a repeat visit from a familiar friend: the tiny and energetic ruby throated hummingbird. By planting brightly colored, nectar producing flowers, you too can lure the hummer to your yards, say wildlife specialists with the Cooperative Extension Service at North Carolina State University. Hummingbirds spend the winter months in southern Mexico and Central America, returning to mid-Florida and the Gulf Coast states by mid-March. They make their way to northern Georgia by the beginning of April and to New York by the beginning of May. By September, hummingbirds start heading back south. If, in their travels, they spot a sunny yard with sufficient food, they may stay a while. Hummers have been known to return to the same places year after year. To attract hummingbirds to your yard, provide plants with tubular shaped blossoms in shades of bright red and orange, the NCSU specialists say. You can use trumpet creeper vines, honeysuckle vines, mimosa trees and red spirea. Perennials that work well in clude garden phlox, coral bells, bee balm, hardy fuchsia and red or multi-colored columbine, the specialists say. Hummingbirds like plants in sunny environments. They’ll also visit hanging pottery plants on open patios and porches if they can find the blossoms they like. You can also put a hummingbird feeder in your yard to attract the birds. If you do put up a feeder, you must routinely fill and clean it. Without impeccable care, feeding solutions can be spoiled by molds and bacteria that can harm or kill the birds, the specialists say. Select a feeder that you can take apart and clean thoroughly. Fill the feeder daily, and clean it thorough ly every four or five days. When a hummingbird arrives to sip sugar water from your feeder or to hover about your flowers, you’ll have a front row seat to a show of fascinating theatrics. Here are a few of the displays the hum mingbird is noted for. — Unlike other birds, the hum mingbird can flit about in every direction imaginable: forward, backward, up, down, to the left and to the right. It can even fly upside down. — The ruby-throated hum mingbird weighs only about 3 grams when it is full grown. In just one day, the creature can drink up to eight times its weight in water. — Though to your eyes the hummingbird’s beating wings will TOP VIDEO RENTALS 1. Millbrook Gets Recognition For Reading Program East Millbrook Middle School’s nationally award-winning reading program received recognition by the Wake County Board of Commissioners on May 28 at the Wake County Courthouse in downtown Raleigh. Principal Pat Gole and teachers Jakie Glick and Jane Johnson decribed the school’s Students and Teachers are Reading program which recently won state and national awards from the International Reading Association. East Millbrook is one of 16 schools in the United State and the only secondary school in the nation selected by the International Reading Association for its exemplary reading program award. This award is given for implementing the characteristics of an outstanding reading/language arts program. Students read daily in the STAR program, from 8:45 to 9:20 a.m. During that time, every teacher—whether a math, physical education, or shop teacher—becomes a reading teacher with a set lesson plan. Students read high-interest stories, write in personal journals, and discuss their reading in round table seminars. The goal of STAR is to improve vocabulary and reading skills. The school reports a 25 percent increase in library book circulation from last year. A schoolwide committee of teachers, parents, and administrators organized the program as part of East Millbrook’s school-improvement plan. FBI Searches For Kilter in Jacksonville JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)-The search for a white supremacist wanted in connection with the slaying of a black USS Saratoga sailor now extends across state lines, with the FBI joining the search. George David Loeb, Jr., is being sought in the May 17 shooting death of Harold J. Mansfield, Jr., a 22-year old sailor who served as an air traffic controller during the Persian Gulf War. Funeral services were held May 20 for the sailor ii. his home town of Oklahoma City and he was buried beside his father in Kansas City. A warrant charging Loeb with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution was issued in Jacksonville that day by U.S. Magistrate Howard T. Snyder. It allows the FBI to join the search for Loeb, 34, head of the Jacksonville Branch of the Church of the Creator, a white supremacist group based in Otto, N.C. An affidavit explaining the probable cause for the warrant was sealed by the judge. Neptune Beach Police Chief William Brandt said police have good reason to think Loeb has left Florida. Florida authorities have issued a murder warrant for Loeb. The FBI said agents are tracking down leads in at least one other state, but declined to elaborate. Meanwhile, police searched Loeb's Jacksonville apartment May 19. They found stacks of racist and anarchist literature, a book on how to make bombs, at least two empty gun cases and a steel shield with a swastika painted on it, Brandt said. No weapons were found in the search. Free Vision Screenings Are Due For Raleigtf/Durham Day Care Centers Do you knovtif your cum can see clearly? According to the National SocivJty to Invent Blindness, one in four school children, .and one in 20 preschool' children, has a vision problem.' “What a Sight!,” a program designed by Tina Clayton of the Wal Mart Vision Center, introduces preschool and school-age children to the importance of eyecare and provides free vision screenings. Ms. Clayton and Dr. David C. Horton are taking the program to day care centers in Raleigh and Durham “We make it. fun for the children by letting them try on glasses and teaching them how the eye works,” says Ms. Clayton. “We find this helps overcome any fear about getting a vision screening from the doctor." Ms. Clayton developed the idea for “What a Sight! ” after describing her job to her four-year-old’s day care classmates. “The children asked so many questions about eyes and glasses that I realized I had an opportunity to make vision care fun for them.” Realizing how important it is to detect children's vision problems early, Ms. Clayton asked Dr. Horten to visit day care centers with her to provide free vision screenings. Dr. Horton readily agreed and has already visited several local day care centers with Ms. Clayton. “Undetected vision problems can cause extreme frustration and learning problems for ^hildrehf and the sooner a problem is uncovered, the more likely it is to be treated successfully,” she said.— “The free vision screening is not designed to replace a comprehensive eye examination, However, we can detect symptoms that jnjay warrant the need for a comprehensive exam,” says Dr. Horton. Dr. Horton says that parents should look for warning signs of vision problems, including; •Persistent rubbing of eyes •Red-rimmed, swollen or encrusted eyelids •Tilting or turning the head to see •Eyes that cross or wander •Headaches, nausea or dizziness •Writing uphill or downhill. “Many eye disorders can be corrected by simply prescribing eyeglasses, but there are also conditions which are quite dangerous and must be identified and treated early in order to prevent permanent loss of vision,” Dr. Horton said. The common problems among school-age children are myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness). These disorders make it difficult for the child to focus either far away or updose, hue can be corrected with eyeglasses. Strabismus (crosseye) is found in four percent of children. In this condition the eyes do not function together. While it is treatable, if left alone strabimhus can lead to other problems for children, such as amblyopia (lasy eye). Amblyopia occurs when the brain responds to more messages from one eye than the other. ',nii8 can be treated by patching the strong'eye, or with surgery, but treatment must be done before the age of six. Ottarwise, the weak eye may suffer permanent reduced vision or even bUndnses. It is also necessary to check for. color deficiency because the condition can interfere with the often color-based methods of teaching younger children. - COLLECTION SEMINAR—SUM H. Vtyct.
