Climbing Vines And Luster, Grace To Summer Landscape By Kim E. Tripp T^*e NCSU Arboretum Ai summer begins to warm our ber green cloak of mystery growa to cover the bare bones of winter’s tree trunks, fence posts, done wells and empty trellises. Woody vines make a beautif\il and •specially graceful contribution to summer's cloak, but in spite of this, they are often overlooked in the •plash of colors heaped on us by spring's flowering trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs. %t, as the season progresses, the flowing outlines and interesting flowers of many vines can provide a •pedal feeling in the garden. Climbing vines are wonderftd for softening harsh structural outlines or flir creating dimension and form where only narrow vertical or horisontal elements like metal foam posts and chain link panels . There are many interesting cHmhlng vines with a great range of character to offor, and some of the most lovely are a group of plants •ailed the climbing hydrangeas. Climbing hydrangeas actuslly in duds several different but related plants native to China and Japan, with similar but varied habit, form and fbUags type There am two true hydrangeas Included in this group. The climb ing hydrangea, Hydrangia anomala subspecies pttiolarU, and ths^epeclss itself, HydrOngta The climbing hydrangea is a* nUmMiigiiliM that mb ritmh «lww^ anything from a rock or brick wall to a telephone pole «wi «« reach IP hot given a structure to hold it. It has gmtly lovely whits flowers that are borne in flat-topped dusters with showy outer flowers and inconspicuous inner flowers, much like many of the viburnums and uiifiSr ths showy hydrangeas in many older residential areas. The flowers are carried in a semi horisontal habit at different levels up ths vine, which creates a wonderftd threedimensional effect in the flowering display. Ths foliage is s rich emerald green and is also carried somewhat horiaontally and in various planes, adding to ths spatial interest of ths vine. The foliage remdina hand some throughout the growing ■saaon and maintains its quality right up until leaf fall in the autumn. The bark on older plant* develops a peeling habit and ia a beautiful cinnamon color, which add* to winter internet Hydrangea anomaia ia different from the climbing hydrangea in that its leaves are narrower and more oval in shape, and the flower clusters are smaller and leas showy in habit. Hydrangea anomaia is also somewhat less hardy than the climbing hydrangea, which is hardy throughout the Eastern U.S. as far north as New Wwglawd Neither of these hydrangeas am troubled bv diseases or pests and both do boot in moist, well-drained ■oil that is high in organic matter. The climbing hydrangea is not com pletely hoot tolerant and could be a good choice for a partially shaded area dike a porch column). Vegetative propagation is a bit difficult According to Michael Dirr, author of the Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, cuttings taken in early summer, before the steins brown, have been rooted under mist following rooting promoter ap plication. Propagation from seed is not difficult ae the seed can be sown with no special treatment. GENERAL MOTORS We never forget who’s driving. are actually not hydrangeas at all but are members of the related genus, Schizophragma. The Japanese hydrangea vine, Schizophragma hydrangeoides, has a much smoother and some what denser habit than the hydran geas. Japanese hydrangea vine has more heart-shaped leaves and sports less showy white flowers whose clusters are somewhat droopier. Nonetheless, the flowers are gently beautiful and combined with the gloeay foliage fill a wonderful space in the landscape. This vine is almost as hardy as the climbing hydrangea and is more tolerant of the hot, wet summers of the Southeast. There is a cultivar of Japanese hydrangea vine called ‘Roseum’ that offers delicate, blush-pink flowers, but the color is very pale and bleaches out in the heat of Southern summers. Another cultivar of Japanese ; hydrangea vine is relatively new and particularly special. Collected in Japan, ‘Moonlight' glows with blue-variegated foliage as the set ting Schizophragma integrifolium, the Chinese hydrangea vine is more oval and less serrated (or “toothed") than its Japanese cousin but is equally attractive. Chinese hydran gea vine is especially tolerant of the climate in the Southeast. NEW CATALOG SALES & PICKUP 4 DAY SALE!
