It’s All in the Stars... UNCF Gets Lilly Grant Awards NEW YORK, N.Y.—The Lilly Endowment has awarded a $9-4 million grant to the United Negro College Fund. It is designated for the establishment of a three-year-long Leadership and Organisational Development Program ior UNCF’s 41 private, historically Mack member colleges and qniverslties. Designed to meet the unique requirements of historically , Mack colleges and universities, the program allows UNCF member institutions to identify their most pressing. long-term organisational needs and develop strategies to address them Additionally, the program will promote team builcjing, networking and a greater degree of information sharing for the common benefit of all the institutions. Students May Gain Aid From Pell Grant Units President Bush is proposing to lower the maximum family income requirement for a Pell Grant to $10,000. Many students because of the steady increase in tuitions must rely on federal and state assistance. Pell Grants are one of the most sought after and utilized forms of federal aid to colleges. If President Bush is successful in getting Congress to pass legislation lowering the required family maximum income to $10,000, a North Carolina service specializing in helping students find financial aid says, then thousands of middle income families will feel the crunch. Concurrently, Gov. Martin has recently indicated a need for North Carolina to increase college tuition by 20 percent for both in-state and out-of state students. This, along with the anticipated 40 percent increase in tuition at community colleges which would affect more than 60,000 full time students, the 20 percent increase for more than 290,000 students taking occupational courses, as well as the 20 perent increase for some 224,000 part-time students, means college students will have to have tuition assistance, says the Scholastic Information Service of Erwin. The loss of Pell Grant eligibility, they say, will leave thousands unable to cover college expenses. Families' will have to seek additional outside funding through college scholarships and grants in order to pay for college. “This is something parents and educators need to write their congressmen about,” says Hal Myers, director of Scholastic Information service. “It’s the only way people in the middle can make their thoughts known by writing to their congressmen or to the governor. “While our agency directly benefits from an increase in families and students using our service, many people, unfortunately, are not even aware that computer-assisted scholarship location services exist. Or that millions of dollars in scholarship money goes unclaimed annually. “In keeping with these recent developments, the Scholastic Information Service will be offering special discounts on our already low fees so that we can provide assistance to anyone who might require it.” STUDENTS AT WORK-StuOonts an sbawn working on “Elactrical Circuits,” ana at a a aw tariat aI ataniaatarv tcknca eHntcuhini eaurtai davatanad bv tha spoow ops b so^p^w v^po^m ^ps ^p^^poov^pooMpay ®sp^^p^osp^p sa^aoo^sawwBn^s oaonoas awa siwWwOOPgPwOO spy ssiw Natlanal Sdanca Rosourca Cantar.
