New Fashion Column Gives Tips To Dressing Better! BY VERNITA EVANS The basic wardrobe is a coordinated series of clothes designed to gc through the seasons, from season to season and 24-hours around the clock. Learning about the basic wardrobe will make it possible for you to always have something to wear that will be appropriate and in good taste. Although the basics will not comprise your entire wardrobe since there is always room for additional pieces, the basic wardrobe will be the core of your wardrobe for years, around which the remainder of your wardrobe is built. As soon as a basic shows wear, it should be replaced so the continuity of your basic is maintained. These items should be planned for, so they can be the best of quality and workmanship you can afford. It would be a serious mistake to skimp on a basic coat that will last, if chosen wisely, for at leastS to 10 years. Even with rough wear, they should last a minimum of 8 years. Basic clothes are timeless; they do not reveal when they were purchased. They are of classic design. Fads and other items which will become quickly dated should be purchased only after all of the basic pieces are purchased Fads have a short fashion life span and, therefore, need not be of as good quality as the basics. Basic clothes are always serviceable. Always ask yourself if a purchase which you are considering will be appropriate, becoming and fashionable in a number of different settings. A basic should be so versatile that through a mere change of accessories, you could achieve a minimum of four different looks. For this reason, wild prints or bright red shoes may be purchase* which will not give you your money’s worth. If you Impulsively buy items you will probably not be able to afford to look as well as you can. For example, il you paid $25 for a [Hint blouse and wore it 30 times before discarding it, it will have cost you $0.83 for each wearing. Compare this to s basic which may last S years and compare then the actual cost. Think, too, of the slacks which you bought on sale for $10, but only wore twice. Not a very good bargain, was it? The colors of your basic wardrobe should be colors around which you car build the remainder of your wardrobe. For this reason, the true basics should always be of the staple or neutral colors. The staple colors are often associated with the winter basics, although they are certainly appropriate for summer wardrobes. The staple colors are nav> blue, black, brown, and oxford or bankers grey. The neutral colors an normally associated with the summer basics, although recent fashion trend* have seen them in the winter wardrobe. The neutral colors are bone, camel, beige, off-white, and pearl grey. The next article will include the elements of the basic wardrobe. The grants are part of a five-year program to start-up funds for new school breakfast programs. USDA's Food and Nutrition Service, which administers the School Breakfast Program, provided 53 million for 1990 and will make 15 million available for new programs each year through 1994. Madigan said the grants have already led to a 15-percent increase in the number of children eating school breakfast, and will contribute to better nutltion and better learning for the children at those schools. The grants were awarded on the basis of need, number of children who could be added to the program, and feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the school districts' proposals. Madigan said the federal grants will supplement money being provided by the states to start the new breakfast programs. He said most of the grant money would be spent by the school districts for, capital expenditures, but that some would also go for training of food service workers and to publicize the new program. North Carolina received $139,756. The highest amount was awarded to New Jersey which received $948,478. BENEVOLENCE Benevolent feeling enables the most trifling action.
