Raleigh Durham International Airp ort is an American Airlines “hub" and offers service by many other major airlines 1 as well. The nearby Research Triangle Park is an outstanding example of the benefits of working relationships among government agencies, universities and busi nesses. In this pastoral setting are major facilities of the IBM Corp., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the chemical giants Burroughs-Wellcome and Glaxo, and many other private industries. The park is also the headquarters of Sigma Xi, the national scientific fraternity, as well as the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology and the National Center for Health Statistics. The keystones of the strong medical capabilities in this area include the Duke University School of Medicine, with its occupational medicine certification program for physicians; the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health, with its Industrial hygiene and public health degree programs; and North Carolina State Ulniversity, with its engineering and orgonomics curricula. These programs are especially relevant for addressing the merging of conventional safety concerns with rapidly developing health issues such as ergonomics and bloodborne diseases. An Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. staff of more than 900 is also located nearby and ean provide advice and assistance with respect to products, materials and equipment. These obvious assets can soon draw on the largest corporate video center on the east coast, an 85,000 square-foot facility with two studios which will be completed by SAS Institute, Inc. this year. The 16 member SAS video staff is already experienced in training communications, and their new center will be available for use by independent filmmakers. With additional training for professional safety and health staff and employers, employees, managers, governmental officials, et. al., I believe that such tragedies as the Hamlet fire can be prevented through better trained state and federal staff. I request your serious consideration to locating a regional training center in the Researcfl| Triangle Park of North Carolina. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, JohnC. Brooks N.C. Commissioner of Labor Raleigh To The Editor: 1990 usLeted in a new decade by breaking a frightening record. 23,438 Americans were murdered BY VIRGINIA TRUAX TIME SAVER — Cut the grilling time for chicken by one-third to one-half by partially cooking in the microwave. Cover chicken with wax paper ana micro wave on high for 10 minutes, turning and rearranging pieces after five minutes. Allow 15 to 20 minutes on the pill, basting with a favorite sauce. STORAGE TIP — If you store your blankets in plastic hags, remember to punch small holes in the bags so air can circulate during the summer months. HOT WEATHER THAW — Do you take meat from the freezer in the morning to thaw for the eve ning meal? During hot summer months wrap it in several thicknesses of newspaper and by late afternoon it’ll be thawed, but still chilled. KEEP IT LIGHT — Your rice will be fluffier if you place a double-folded paper towel over the top of the pan as soon as the rice is cooked, then replace the lid and let stand in a warm spot for five to 10 minutes before serving. THINK TALL — Ice tea spoons are great to have in a kitchen drawer for thrusting into tall jars such as those holding mayo, pickles or olives. SQUEEZE PLAY — Your handwashed sweaters will dry much quicker if you force as much moisture as possible from them. Try pressing them between turk ish towels and squeesing water out with a rolling pin. C 1SS1. TrlbufM MM SarytOM last year—more than in any ■ingle year of the previous decade—according to the FBI Uniform Crime Report. Firearmi were the weapon of choice in nearly 60 percent of the murders. And handguns alone accounted for nearly SO percent of the total. It becomes harder and harder to rationalize the growing violence around us when we realize that the areas with the fastest-rising levels of violence are rural states, according to a recent Senate Judiciary Committee report. Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Arkansas, Iowa, and Oklahoma, among others, all had higher increases in the rate of crime than did New York City last year. Ten years ago, while serving as press secretary to President Ronald Reagan, I was shot in the head by a man who easily purchased a handgun over the counter. Since that time, there has been mounting pressure on Congress to pass legislation making it more difficult for criminals, drug addicts and the mentail ill to obtain handguns. This year. Congress passed a bill requiring a waiting period and background check for the purchasers of handguns—a proposal long advocated by law enforcement officers TONY BROWN (Continued from page 4) between 1936 and 1964. During that period, both parties fell all over each other passing bills that benefited blacks because—and this is the point—blacks voted 65 percent Democratic and 35 percent Republican. Therefore, the future of the race-based “Southern Strategy” to win white votes is actually in the hands of black voters, not white Republicans. We can stop the “Southern strategy” in its tracks today if 20 percent of blacks voted Republican or independent. And, simultaneously, we would change the candidates and the policies of the Republican Party—Just as we stopped the Democratic Party from being an all-white party by joining. It’s not about what either party will do for us (which is nothing); it’s about what we will do for ourselves by intelligently using the two-party system. That's why I Joined the Republican Party. “Tony Brown’s Journal" TV series can be seen on public television In Raleigh la WUNC-TV 4. Please consult TV listings or phone station for air time. But the hardcore gun lobby continues to fight the Brady Bill, >md is vigorously lobbying President Bush to veto this life-saving measure. President Bush needs to hear from us—the other guys; the folks without millions of dollars or armies of lobbyists. I have a fast and easy way for you to send a message to the president. Just call 1-900-226-4455 and leave your name and address. A letter will be sent in your name to the president letting him know you support the Brady Bill. It was a fourth-grade classroom that was added when one of the fourth-grade classes was found to have an enrollment of 34 students. They did not reduce the class to 37 and dispose of the brighter or slower other seven to higher or lower grades. Instead, they hired a retired male to teach the other grade, who expressed pure Joy at coming out of retirement to work with the youngsters. I talked with the counselor (I think she was) about some of our experiences here. Trying to identify, she told me the story of a little girl about two yean £o who was having some behavioral difficulties in kindergarten a few yean previously. This child’s mother was experiencing difficulties that the counselor couldn’t address. She said she recognised that they had this kid for seven houn a day and that it hit her that the home needn’t get in the way of school. She talked with the child and told her that she expected her to shine. She says that this kid gives her the OK sign everytime she sees her and consistently scores in the 99th percentile on the CAT achievement test they use. YTIUIC M*v»v ---- The children, for some reason (some of them) carried their lunch to the cafeteria. Perhaps overcrowding, perhaps some malfunction. Whatever-they all did so in an orderly fashion. What really shocked me is that they did so without the accompaniment or policing of the teachers. Yes, they were normal kids, no, they were not robots, yes, some swaggered and others walked stralght-it just didnt fnmttmr at this school what the differences were in peroonality, dress, looks or economic condition. How I long for my children to experience a school such as this, for with the exception of the newness of the facility, it was the school of my childhood. Incidentally, every child I saw waa African-American. This waa a public school of all-black Lawnslde, N.J., where the mayor is an African-American as well as the school! board and superintendent. I saw no evidence of homelessness, drug addiction or alcoholism on the streets-no mumbling humans walking aimlessly from pillow to post. As I drove back to North Carolina and reviewed my experience in my mind, the thought that came to me was—Home >t where they always let you In. PET ^ CORNER I know a wonderful 3 year-old male neutered boxer who has been diag nosed as having a thyroid problem. He was put on medication. He is a very large, handsome dog, but now has “thinning fur” on his back and side area. His fur color also appears uneven in this area. The dog had one of these elec tronic flea collars with the ultrasonic noise to drive off fleas. The ani mal’s owner asked if this would affect his thyroid? Included among the many symptoms, one of the most common ones we see of an underactive thyroid, is a thinning fur coat and sometimes a change in the pigmenta tion of the skin or fur. It is a syndrome that has been identified in many breeds, but the boxer is one that I have seen it in several times. It definite ly is not related to the electronic flea collar. Not that I think these collars are the ultimate answer anyhow.
