Have you had your air conditioner checked over lately? For most car owners, using their car’s air condition ing is taken for granted. An air conditioning tune up, however, could save you some big bucks at a later date while giving you a trouble-free, cool driving season. While there are many causes for your air condi tioner to work poorly or even fail, some common problems often occur. One item, the compressor belt, might be slipping from being too loose, or it may be worn out and need to be replaced. The controls used for opening and closing the vents and ducts sometimes go hay wire and need to be re placed or adjusted. Sensors and many of the intricate working parts also can fail. Air condi tioning specialists are trained to detect and fix these. It’s easy to check the performance of the air conditioner in your car. The system needs to run for about five minutes with the windows closed. Next insert a thermom eter into an opening where the cool air comes out. The thermometer should read somewhere between 35 to 45 degrees. If the temperature is not low enough, then the sys tem may need to be recharged. \ Running your air con ditioner when the refrig erant is low can cause damage to the compres sor. Recharging your air conditioning unit the right way requires purg ing the system and re placing the refrigerant. The refrigerant used in air conditioning systems belongs to a class of chemicals called chloro fluorocarbon chemicals, commonly known as fluo rocarbons. Lost refriger ant from automotive-air conditioners is estimated to be responsible for be tween 16 and 20 percent of osone destruction. Car Bob urges you to have your air condition? ing unit recharged by a shop that has refrigerant recycling equipment in use. Robert OeMwco Dear Dr. DeMarco: Can multiple sclerosis be effectively treated with high pressure oxygen? Answer: It appears, from recent research, that patients who have recently developed multi ple sclerosis (MS) benefit from hyperbaric oxygen .therapy (HBO). or what you call high pressure oxygen. HBO, scarce and ex pensive in this country, is known primarily for its use with deep-sea divers to prevent the bends. Presently, there are only about 150 HBO chambers used medically at this time here. The number probably will grow rapidly. During HBO treat ment, patients are in an HBO "chamber where their bodies are subjected to an 100 percent oxygen atmosphere at two to three times normal atmo spheric pressure. Oxygen concentrations in their bloodstreams increase about 10-15 times normal and apparently help keep tissues alive that have been deprived of their normal blood supply. MS is called the crip pler of young adult s, since it is the most common central nervous system disorder among such peo ple in the U.S.. has no known cause, an unpre dictable course, a wide variety of symptoms and no known cure. Some researchers say that HBO is the most ef fective treatment that can be given to “early MS.” If given early, it can arrest MS in 70 percent of patients. The only known side effect from HBO is minor ear prob lems from the pressure. I Thought You Would Like To Know: One of the most frustrat ing aspects of this job is my inability to help ev eryone who asks for it, or provide the addresses of all the resources that ex ist to offer support and health information to those who need it.
