Like John Holden, Monte Jones led a useful life and left a loving family to grieve, but to survive. How dare you say that the world would be better off with fewer Monte Joneses? If there were mors people with his helpfbl nature, his thoughtfulness, his infec tious laughter and his cast for life, this world would be a much better place. No, madame “writer," you cer tainly did not know Monte. I call you unfortunate. Sincerely yours, Carol Gray-McGruder Richmond, Va. To The Editor: Everyone should have the Martin Luther King Fever during this month. But I believe it shouldn't stop in January but last year long. There are many people who care nothing about what King did for us. I say us because we are all in the world together, whether you are black, white, Indian or whatever. Although there are also some who don’t think all of us fit in this big world together and I can’t understand it be cause we are here today and here to stay. I don’t mean we are going to stay here forever as individuals but the different races will be here. We all should be trying to keep the dream alive be cause we all ought to want peace and equality to live our lives to the full extent among our brethren. I can’t understand the so-called Christians who say they love the Lord but hate me because I’m black. If you don’t love me and everybody else, then you don’t love the Lord. A lot of times people say they don’t like someone and have never even sat down and had a conversation with them. A lot of times people find out that the person they thought they could never like could end up being the best friend they could ever have had. People must treat people equal and to give people the benefit of the doubt and not judge them by the color of their skin and by what they have heard. It is a shame people have downgraded, MLK, blam ing him for the welfare sys tem and anything else that some black people benefit from. Some have even tried to take his doctoral degree MINORITY CONTRACTOR WANTED Prime contractor bidding on projects involving highway construction is solic iting subcontractor bids on the follow ing items of work: Hauling Adjust Manholes Adjust Water Valves Project includes: City of Raleigh Street Resurfacing Project No. PW-1992-3 Plans and specs are available for in spection at the AGC offices in Raleigh as well as the offices of Rea Construc tion Company, 521 East Morehead Street, Charlotte. LSNC Is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. Minorities, women, the handicapped, and the elderly are encouraged to apply. from him when he is lying in his grave. I could see if it was a bad part about him but let the manrestin peace with a degree. This tells me that if people are all that jealous and foolish toward a dead man, that I am the one in trouble and not him. MLK can’t see what they are doing to him but I can see what they are doing to me. This makes me wonder is this why we face so many problems today because these people like the ones who are picking on a dead man making it tough on us. I believe they have the atti tude that MLK may have made history but the next one behind him will not make it without a struggle. Well, I plan to keep the dream alive and I wish oth ers would also. You can’t do it, though, if you are not fixed up. This is 1992 and Jesus wants you. With this world in the shape it is in, everyone ought to want peace, equality and togeth erness. Thank you, Curmilus Dancy, Jr. Pinetops Boy Scouts To Celebrate 82 Active Years Not many 82-year-old* can boast of eternal youth. But one senior is as young today as when it was founded in 1910. The Boy Scouts of America cele brated its 82nd birthday with na tionwide festivities last week in Scouting Anniversary Week. Locally, the Occoneechee Council conducted mall expos, window dis plays and banquets throughout its communities. A major focus of the week was the presentation of the BSA’s annual “Report to the Nation’ to President Bush and members of Congress. Both adult and youth members of Scouting took part in several days of meetings with federal officials and military leaders. “Our 82nd anniversarv is the perfect time for everyone in the council area to commemorate the proud history and benefits of Scout ing,” said Lee Spence, finance and marketing director. “Since the Boy Scouts of America as founded, Scouting has provided millions of young people with values and expe riences needed to meet the chal lenges of the future.” The Scouting movement origi nated in Great Britain in 1907. Two years later, William Boyce, a Chi cago publisher traveling in London, became lost in a London fog. A young boy offered to help him and led him to his destination. When Boyce thanked the boy for his gracious ness, the boy explained that as a Boy Scout, it was his duty to help others, and declined a tip. Impressed with the boy’s actions, Boyce met with Britain’s Boy Scout founder, Robert Baden-Powell, and laid the groundwork to bring the Scouting program to the United States. POSITIVE THOUGHTS Some people make promises for the pleasure of breaking them. William Hazlitt Action is a mirror in which we show our image. Anonymous ERNIE’S WORLD (Continued from page 4) looking at old movies of them holding cigarettes so proudly in their hands but here in the ’90s are no longer with us. If there is any one resolution that we could put on the table in the ’90s, that is to have an almost smoke-free society. There will always be the “smokers," but those one billion people who smoked five trillion cigarettes, and undoubtedly the figure has risen tremendously since 1986, could be cut drastically and a smoke-fires society could contribute to a healthier environment as well as a healthier population. _ _ YOU CAN Yet,.you can! You can be happy, you can be successful, you can be healed. You can be free, you can be all that was intended for you to be. Everyone who has contributed something did so because of his heart. NCAE President Says Long School Day Mistake, Meet Critical Needs rousing ui'uuemic uLiiieveiueiii will require more than simply add ing time to the school day,” says North Carolina Association of Edu cators President Rose Marie Lowry, as she responded to reports tha the State Board of Education will con sider mandating a longer school day. “We feel that it is a serious mis take to discuss a longer school day without discussing measures to meet the instructional needs of the current school day,” she said at a news conference last week. Lowry cautioned againstignoring the real problem. “NCAE is not in favor of a longer school day if this merely means more time to do the same things.” Three key areas linked to im proved instruction and improved learning conditions were identified by Lowry as more important goals than a longer day. Lowry cited a comprehensive curriculum, flexible scheduling, and shared preparation time for school staffs as critical needs in the instructional arena. Lowry’s comments reflect the urgency educators feel for address ing many other issues, before con centrating on a longer school day. SECRETARY/RECEPTIONIST N.C. EEO/AA Employer Lowry cited the need for smaller classes, for striving to achieve the six national education goals adopted by President Bush and the governors, with special emphasis on two goals in particular—readiness for learning and a healthy school environment. She stressed the need for up-to-date textbooks for every student, as well as sufficient in structional materials and equip ment. “When you visit a classroom, just ask how much of what’s in there was purchased with the teacher’s personal money,” she suggested. She also added air conditioning, teacher access to telephones, and homework to the areas of critical need, before entertaining the notion of adding more time to the instruc tional day. Lowry was joined by 1991 state Teacher of the Year Annie Pegram, a first-grade teacher in Durham City, in focusing on the interrup tions during instructional time that rob students and teachers of pre cious minutes per day, hours per week and weeks per year. Lowiy stated that NCAE sup ports and advocates school-based decision-making. “This practice should be encouraged,” she said, “to allow the people working in the schools and the people supporting the schools to make the basic deci sions about how it operates. “We strongly recommend that, at this time, attention be directed at what’s included now in the class room day that interferes with the best use of instructional time,” Lowry concluded.
