Wake County School Students Tune* Up For Pieces Of Gold Concert There’s opening-night excitement in the air ae Wake County school students loosen their voices and warm up their instruments for Pieces of Gold, the annual perform ing arte extravaganza which will be held on Wednesday, March 4, at 7 pjn. in Raleigh’s Memorial Audito rium. Sponsored by the Wake County Education Foundation and the Wake County Public School System, nearly 600 Wake County school students will show off their singing and dancing skills during the an nual performance. From violins to handbells, from solos to Broadway production numbers, students’ tal ents shine at Pieces of Gold. Local actor and director Ira David Wood, III will be the master of ceremonies. Tickets are $8 (balcony), $15 (mezzanine), $26 (orchestra) and $60 (dress circle) and are available from the foundation, 2302 Noble Road, Raleigh 27608. Mail orders should be received by Feb. 21. Pieces of Gold tee-shirts are avail able at the foundation office, at rehearsals, or at the performance. The shirts come in all sizes and are $10 each. Selected groups will rehearse at Martin Middle School from 8-6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 18 and 19, and from 3:30-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26. A ftsll rehearsal will be held at Martin on Saturday, Feb. 29, from noon to 6 p.m. Students hit the stage at Memorial Auditorium on Tues day. March 3, from 2-7 p.m. for the dress rehearsal. The following schools will partici pate: •Elementary: Apex, Brassfield, Brentwood, Briarcliff, Conn, Farm ington Woods, Fuller, Fuquay-Var ina, Lacy, Smith, Underwood, and York. •Middle: Carnage, Daniels, Lees ville, Ligon and Martin. •High: Broughton, Enloe, Garner and Millbrook. Groups from Washington Ele mentary and Martin Middle will also perform in the auditorium lobby. Proceeds from Pieces of Gold go toward the ongoing efforts of the Wake County Education Founda tion, a partner with the Wake County Public School System. The foundation is a nonprofit commu nity agency which awards grants, sponsors scholarships and recogni tion programs for teachers and stu dents, develops new programs, and serves as a bridge be twee* the school system and the community. Pieces of Gold proceeds fund pro grams and activities for public edu cation in Wake County. Pieces of Gold is orfe of the many ways the foundation supports the school sys tem.
