“ Louis Powell Eulogized At - Wake Chapel M Louis “Jim” Powell, of 31S6 Ward Road, died Aprils. Serv ices were held Monday at Wake Chapel Baptist Church. Burial was in Carolina Bibli cal Gardens. Surviving are a wife, Doris Powell of the home; step daughter, La Tania Y. Jones of Raleigh; son, Talferio A. Powell; stepson, George E. Jones, Jr. of Raleigh; sister, Sarah Wilder of Lenoir; and brother, Theodore “Buster” of Raleigh. “Jim,” as he was affection ately known, graduated from J.W. Ligon High School in 1961, where he played base ball, basketball, and football for the Ligon Little Blues. He matriculated to Shaw Uni versity in 1962 where he also played baseball, basketball and football for the Shaw University Bears. Jim received numerous awards while playing on sev eral softball, basketball and baseball teams in the San ford, Garner and Raleigh areas. He was employed with the City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department and at the time of his death was assistant director of the - Worthdale Community Cen : ter. : Easter Egg Hunt Set The Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department in vites youth 10 years and un der to attend the Citywide Easter Egg Hunts Saturday at 1 pm. He received an achieve ment award from Mayor Avery Upchurch in 1990 for initiating the City of Raleigh Twilight League. He was also a member of the Capital City Umpires Association. Jim attended Wake Chapel Baptist Church and was a member of the Senior Choir there. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Powell Shire. He was a strong source of love and support for his family and friends. Arrangements were hand led by Lea Funeral Home. Hall has been employed 35 yean with the convention, longer than any employee in the organisation’s history. Hall, for all of those yean, __ I hit duties as a HALL postal administrator with a smile on his face and a kind word for his co workers and the genera] public. Says Hall, 1 never met a person I didn’t like.” Hie favor has been returned throughout the gospel personality's lifetime as his talents have been recognized by presidents Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, and two first ladies, Lady Bird Johnson and Barbara Bush. In the early *708, Hall was cited by a nationally published gospel maga zine as a gospel singer for the month of December. Later in that aama decade, ha received tha kay to tha city of Raleigh and waa awarded a first prise at tha N.C. State Farm Festival in 1889. Hall recalls in looking back on tha beginnings of his gospel ringing career,“I could picture myself standing up before a largo group and ringing* Ho ultimately has dona just that, appearing before crowds numbering 10,000 or more. The chores of business manager for the Sensational Evening Five still keep Hull very much involved in gospel musk today. This year will make 43 years he's been ringing with the group. Hall says of his future at the Baptist State Convention, *1 plan to retire in five years.” When asked about a date of retirement for his lifelong love of gospel music, Hall couldn't give a date, but he did give The CAROLINIAN the time of his Sunday morning gospel show on radio station WBHA-FM, which he has been doing for the past 14 years.
