Principals Of Year Honored Principals in Graham and Ahoakie are the finalists for the state Principal of the Year honors. Jane Burke, principal of Hertford County High School in Ahoakie, and Wayne Beam, principal of Southern middle School in Graham, were recently chosen from among aix aemi-finaliats to vie for the top principal award in the competition sponsored by Wachovia Bank of North Carolina and the Depart ment of Public Instruction. Hie state principal of the year will be named at a luncheon in Raleigh on June 3 and rec ognized at the State Board of Education meeting June 4. The other semi-finalists are Jackie Parrish, Union Elementary School in Clinton; Glenda Poole, Northwest Cabarrus High School in Concord; Mary Ruth Fowler, Jonathan Valley Elemen tary School in Waynesville; and Ronnie Robbins, Brown Middle School in Hiomasville. Hie Principal of the Year program, in its ninth year, recognizes outstanding public school principals in North Caro lina. Hie state winner receives $2,500 for personal or professional use, and his or her school receives the same amount of equipment or materials. The finalist receives $1,500 for personal or profes sional use and the same amount for his I or her school. Semi-finalists receive $1,000 for personal or professional use and $1,000 for their schools. Local win ners receive $100. The cash awards are all sponsored fay Wachovia. The new principal of the year will suc ceed John Schroeder, 1991 state princi pal of the year from High Point. School systems select a local principal of the year Who goes on to compete at the regional level. Regional and state committees choose the finalists in these areas. These committees include princi pal*. teachers, college/university profes sors, community members and represen tatives of Wachovia Bank. The two fi nalists for principal of the year will be visited by an on-site committee before the final selection is made.
