RHA Taking Strides To Protect
Environment With New Program
You certainly can’t blame the
Raleigh Housing Authority for con
tributing to the hole on the ozone
layer.
The agency is taking great
strides to save the environment
with the implementation of a de
vice that retrieves Freon from re
frigerators and air conditioners.
The RHA sent four workers to a
seminar in Charlotte where they,
became certified retrievers of
Freon.
Glenn Jackson, a maintenance
mechanic for the RHA, was a par
ticipant in the program sponsored
by the Refrigeration Service Engi
neers Society. He learned how to
use the Freon retrieval device that
cost about $2200.

Griffin likens his style to Richard
Pryor’s streetwise work in the 1870s.
“Black comedy has gotten cutesy,
but now it’s going back to the grass
roots,” Griffin said in an interview in
the Los Angeles Times. “It's going
back to what’s happening in the
streets.”
Arriving in Los Angeles with no
money three years ago, his work
impressed Mitzi Shore who owns the
Comedy Store. “It's very unusual for
a comic to grow as fast as Eddie did.
He was a totally dedicated artist."

Judge Refuses To Allow Lawyer
To Wear Kente Cloth In Court
WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP>—A
District of Columbia judge was
within his rights in refusing to al
low a lawyer to try a jury case
wearing an African kente cloth

former chief justice of the Supreme
Court said.
Judges should be allowed wide
discretion in deciding what is ap
propriate clothing for the court
room, Chief Justice Warren Bur
ger said in an opinion piece pub
lished in a recent Washington
Post. Burger served as chief justice
from 1969 to 1986.
The cloth is a colorful strip of
fabric that originated in West Af
rica.
“If, as The Post suggests, each
advocate can wear any symbolic
dress desired, there is a retd risk
that it can be an appeal to preju
dice—a Mason seeking to exercise
inappropriate influence on a juror
who is a Mason,” Burger said.
“And what a bizarre business it
would be for a Knight of Columbus
to appear with his elegant, mili
tary-style garb and flowered hat,
and perhaps the sword,” he said.
‘Imagine a Knight of Columbus on
one side and a Mason in his frater
nal garb on the other!”
It is rare for a former Supreme
Court justice to comment publicly
on legal issues.

vey III wore a kente cloth with his
suits to court for what he said
were cultural and religious rea
sons. Harvey, who is black, is an
officer in a church that requires
the cloth be worn as an expression
of religious faith and ethnic soli-,
darity both at work at in private,
D.C. Superior Court Judge
Robert Scott ordered him not to
wear the cloth, but the lawyer re
fused to obey. Scott dismissed Har
vey from the case in June when he
didn’t enter a plea for his client.
