LOTS OF NEWS NEVER
GETS INTO PRINT
Somebody is always sending us
| something to print, with the nota
tion “in case you need something
to fill up.” Lots of people think
maybe newspaper doesn’t get
enough news to fill it up every
week. To the contrary, there is
always plenty of news, if we get
the time to write it, and the time
to put it into type.
For instance, we are quite
ashamed of ourselves for having
failed to carry stories to do justice
to the recognition that recently
came to Ben Dixon Mac Neill of
Buxton, and Aycock Brown of
Manteo who have received out
standing awards for the literary
and publicity work.
Again this week there has been
important news. Woody Fearing,
Jr., 14-year-old son of Mr. and
Mrs. W .B .Fearing killed a goose,
while Jerry Daniels, 15, killed two
geese in one day. That is big
news, as we can testify how I felt
upon killing the first goose when
I was about 15. Had I been on
the job, we would have had pic
tures of these youngsters with
their game.
Again a good job has been done
of stringing Christmas lights in
the Manteo business district. And
nobody does a better job of decor
ating doorways and lighting at
tractive trees than the people of
Roanoke Island. In fact, Manteo
and vicinity is noted for its well
kept homes the year round.
At long last, as the saying goes,
the new bridge over Roanoke
Sound is to be open for the holi
day visitors, and it will be most
welcome. No longer will our visi
tors be made afraid because of the
rattle of board on the old bridge
and now at last ends the flat-tire
era that came of loos? nails work
ing out of these boards.
The Manteo Rotary Club Mon
day night decided to hold no meet
ing for the next two weeks, but
will pay for the meals just the
same, one week to the ladies who
serve the dinner; the other to char
itable causes favored by Rotary.
Rev. H .R. Ashmore, Methodist
minister, came 1 out to be guest
speaker, and the members talked
so much there was only two min
utes left for his speech, and he had
to put it off until later.
Elmer Midgett down at Fear
ings was delighted to note the
publicity that attended the ap
pearance of Mr. and Mrs. John
Moore at the Wright celebration
Monday. Up until a year or two
ago, John had been the forgotten
man of aviation. He and Mrs.
Moore were mighty important
guests at the return of the origi
nal plane in Washington two years
ago, at which time he appeared on
Mrs. Lizzie Lilly of Elizabeth
City were here for the week end.

MEET AT WANCHESE
The Lonmaluska Council Num
ber 28, Daughters of Pocahontas,
held its regular meeting Friday
night, December 14, at the Wan
chese Masonic Hall. During the
business session, the. following

ed, the members enjoyed a Christ-,
mas party. Gifts were exchanged,
and the hostess served jello and
fruit cake.

All of us who know and love
the Drinkwaters were greatly
pleased to hear of their recent trip
to New York as guests of Eastern
Airlines, and to learn on their re
turn that they had the time of
their lives. There is nothing too
good for this splendid couple who
have done so much for their
neighbors and friends in Dare
County.
Were Fearing’s Case any small
er, or the Elizabeth City High
School band any bigger there
would be a lot of trouble in serv
ing this great organization so
handsomely as was done Monday,
when the band came over from
Kill Devil Hill to enjoy a steak
dinner. The entire band was well
taken care of but there was no
room for outsiders. And this is no
small case either.
The Wanchese Ruritan Club
meets tonight, and I hope to take
in that occasion, for they always
feed well. I am afraid something
will happen, now with all the
Christmas rush to keep me away.
This club has a most interesting
meeting the third Friday of each
month. V .G. Williams, furniture
salesman and Sunday School
teacher, has just taken over as
president.
Among the best news items of
the season is word that Julian Aus
tin, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. J.
H. Austin of Frisco, is listed
among those alive although a
prisoner of war in Korea. It will
be much nicer when we see him
home again. Having known Julian
so well for many years and enjoyed
the friendship too of his mother
and his grandfather, it was quite
a blow when news came first that
he was among the missing.
WIFE OF PAUL JONES
DIES IN TYRRELL CO.
Funeral ries for Mrs. Mary
Frances Jones, 78, who died at
her home in Coluihbia Saturday,
were conducted Monday at 3
o’clock at the Columbia Christian
Church by the Rev. William Wal
ters, assisted by the Rev. J. W.
Alford, the Rev. E. R. Meekins
and the Rev. W. E. Pope. Burial
was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones was a lifelong resi
den of Tyrrell County, the wife of
Paul Jones and a member of Gum
Neck Christian Church.
Surviving are two daughers,
Miss Hettie Jones, of Columbia,
and Mrs. J. W. Steele, of North
Wilksboro; three sons, Arthur C.
Jones, of Portsmouth; Dewey
Jones, of Norfolk, and Lawson
Jones, of Columbia; four sisters,
Mrs. J. N. Davenport, of Eliza
beth City; Mrs. Floyd Jones, of
Creswell; Mrs. L. B. Combs, Sr., of
Columbia, Route Three, and Mrs.
R. W. Jones, of Fairfield; one
brother, C. F. Kemp, of Columbia,
Route Three, and 14 grandchil
dren.
