Mechanization has played an important part, for the number of tractors on farms has increased approximately ninety per cent in the last five years! This advancement, coupled with more efficient use of farm resources, point to higher and more stable farm incomes. North Carolina continues to move forward as a better place in which to work, play and live. Another fine example of North Carolina progress is the steadily-improving standards of operation by malt beverage retailers in "legal control" counties. The United States Brewers Foundation policy of cooperat ing with such retailers, in maintaining orderly law abiding conditions for beer and ale sales, provides an important contribution to the pleasant living that is North Carolina. The 278th district com prises 38 clubs all the way from Burlington to the coast. The program, combining an ex cellent mixture of Rotary informa tion, inspiration, relaxation and entertainment, has been announced by District Governor Olin Broad way of Henderson and- District Governor Nominate George D. Col clough, chairman of £he arrange ments committee for the host club, Burlington. The Alamance Hotel will be headquarters. Two of the principal speakers will be Dr. George D. Heaton, past tor of the Myers Park Baptist Church, Charlotte, and the Rev. A. Elliston Cole, rector of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Bloomington, Ind., the presonal representative of Rot ary International President Frank Spain. The Rev. Mr. Cole, who gives the principal address at the Fellow ship Dinner Sunday night, April 20, is widely known as an out standing speaker. He is a past president of his Bloomington club, which he served as Secretary for 21 years, and has also served RI as District Governor and Director. He is a native of Atlanta. Dr. Heaton, who speaks at the Conference banquet Tuesday night, is regarded as a pioneer and lead ing authority in the field of re ligious education. SCHOOLS (Continued from Page One) square and round dancing, ping pong games and other activities. When asked if the parents came to help with this guidance program a teacher answered, “Oh yes, the faithful few, but I know that the program could not be carried on if it were not for Mrs. David Stick.” On a shelf in one of the high school classrooms I saw a cup won for their good sportsmanship by the girls’ basketball team in a recent tournament. The boys’ team of last year won the same type of cup. The teachers of the school feel that their good sportsmanship might be the result of the work at the rec reation center as well as that on the athletic field. In the classrooms there were evidences of happy living as well as good scholastic work. Especial ly did the seventh and eighth grade room show these elements with its new draperies of soft greens, and the two primary rooms with growing plants, news on the blackboard, and some new primary tables. The seniors and two juniors of the school had just returned from an Easter vacation trip that they were calling “Know your state tour.” They had chosen to make this trip in preference to one to Washington, D. C., and had gone in cars under care of Mr. and Mrs. W .H. West of the High School TWO HEADLINERS FOR ROTARY CONFERENCE f a IBM ip f 11 wiy* . v -W I IW Dr. George D.
