VOLUME XVII NO. 45 KNOW YOUR SCHOOLS By MABEL EVANS JONES ♦ A new highway, though far from complete, has in the past two years given a vast change to the picture of the schools of the South Banks of Dare County. Four small schools until recently tried to carry grades one to twelve, with an inadequate number of teachers for the courses and grades supposed to be taught. The reorganization of the schools sends all high school children to a central school, now located at Bux- | ton. The-high school enrollment is at present 92 with an anticipated increase w'ith better high school facilities. In the Hatteras School there are I three teachers carrying the eight elementary grades. This week the teachers and students there are busy with an anticipated coopera tion with the other schools of the South Banks in a Field Day to be held at Buxton on May 2. There is a definite appreciation in the Hat-i teras school community for a pro tective wire fence recently put a round the play ground at the school. The play ground is not large and bordering on the main traffic street of the village was in constant dariger from cars driving on the playground or children run ning into the streets. The teachers, ; busy with the pressure teaching of the last weeks of school, told something of interesting plans for their local school commencement. At the Buxton school there was active preparation for a Field Day program that would involve all grades from the first through the twelfth*imd all of the other schools of the Hatteras Banks. Their play ground developed on the acreage back of the school, was to utilize a well packed old road for a foot race track. Plans were being in genuously worked out. Good school work is going on - there, but jthe ischool building is crowded and the high school classrooms inadequate for the work being done. There was expressed hope for the beginning of the new high school building this summer. Avon in the consolidation pro gram has two teachers with eight grades, yet the school building, now apparently too large, was in excellent condition and all parts of it used to some advantage. The auditorium was a place for com munity meetings as well as school assembly and rehearsals. The building separate from the main qpilding constructed several years Jgo for a high school annex but never used, has become a well :ared for youth center, and is in <ood repair. A former classroom was being used for 4-H Club and Home Demonstration work. Evi lences of community school spirit vere there. All 4-H girls have been urged by Mary Kirby, Home Agent to enter the dress revues. Senior county winner will be awarded an expense paid trip to 4-H Week to participate in the State 4-H Revue. Preservation bulletins of all types are available at the home agent’s office. About 75 attended the freezer demonstration at Kitty Hawk school, Thursday, April 24. Mrs. Martha Patterson, home economist with Power-Binford Electric Manufacturing Company (International Harvester, distribu tors for this area) presented a freezer demonstration sponsored by the Orr-Livesay Truck and Tractor Company of Elizabeth City. Mrs. Patterson showed the pre paration of food and packaging materials for the home freezer. She packaged chicken and straw berries and discussed the proces sing of vegetables—a delicious meal of meat buns, a casserole vegetable dish and frozen biscuits were removed from the freezer and cooked in the oven. A previously prepared tossed salad was removed from the refrigerator and served with frozen cake and frozen potato chips. These were served with punch to those attending the dem onstration. First big catch of bluefish made by anglers along the Dare Coast this year was landed offshore in the vicinity of several j Outer Diamond wrecks on Wednes day of last week. Two Virginia Beach anglers, R. S. Osborne and Clyde Davis, trolling with Captain William Foster aboard the Alba tross 11, landed 201 blues, many of which weighed up to one and a half pounds each. Majority of the fish taken, however, were of the ‘‘snapper” size, it was reported. 1 “This catch would indicate that the blues are coming in somewhat ahead of schedule this year,” said Scotty Gibson, who is host to more fishermen at his Atlantic View Hotel than any other person. Previously commercial fisher men had reported taking a few blues, some of which weighed up to and more than three pounds. , None had been taken from the in : let by trollers, although one false report indicated that two blues had ’ been captured by anglers who also ■ falsely reported they had taken' two channel bass, about two weeks ago. School Tuna Landed One small tuna, a 17-pounder was landed by the party aboard the Albatross 11. “This was a real bluefin,” said big game fish ing guide Ernal Foster, who identified the catch. It was the first school tuna taken with rod and reel since before the war, in the Hatteras waters, according to Foster. “Its appearance at . this season of the year would in dicate that the species is migra tory and that schools of them are moving northward towards the Jersey coast where they are taken each summer,” Foster add ed. BASS NEAR COLINGTON By AYCOCK BROWN Nags Head.—Largest black bass landed from the fresh ponds of the Nags Head area this season was one that weighed an even six pounds. It was caught on Thursday morning by N. B. Epstein of Tarry town, N. Y., who was fishing wtih his wife in one of the numerous bags of the Colington Island sec tion. To land his big bass, Angler j Epstein was using a silver minnow lure. The Epsteins each landed their limit without difficulty. Next best report from the fresh ponds this week was three days of fishing by Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Nic odemus of Frederick, Md. On Tues day they landed eight, the follow ing day 12 and on Thursday each got their limit. The Frederick an glers were also fishing the bays of Colington but the bass they landed were lured with jitterbugs. LOST COLONY’S NEW OLD TOM IF J K® B A FRED YOUNG, a graduate student in dramatic arts at the Univers- | ity of North Carolina where he has played feature roles in Play- i maker productions, will play the important role of Old Tom Harris in The Lost Colony when this symphonic drama opens for its 12th season in Waterside Theatre here on Saturday night, June 28. Fred Young is no stranger in the Lost Colony circles. Last year he was cast as Master of Queen’s Ceremonies,.a comic but difficult role. By many he was declared to be the best in that role of any who ever played the part. He was also understudy for the Old Tom role and made a hit on the nights that he played this part replacing pop ular Warren Lee Terry who played Old Tom for two summer sea sons. Henley -of Kitty Hawk, is serving with the armed forces in Germany. He is with the 43rd Div., recently sent from Camp Pickett, Va. to join the N.A.T.O. forces in Europe under command of Gen. Eisenhower. Pvt. Henley is with the Medical Co. At the present time he is in charge of his jeep, which is equipped to ac comodate four stretcher patients. Besides his duties as Doc, he is his own driver and mechanic. He says the country is beautiful over there, the weather is getting nice and warm. But he is looking forward to getting back to the good old U. S. A. and in to Dare County again. PTA FIELD SECRETARY TO VISIT WANCHESE Miss Blanche Halley, Field Sec retary of the State PTA, will meet Tuesday, May 6 at 2:30 p. m. with the Wanchese PTA, Mrs. Lawrence Swain, District Director, announc ees. Manteo, Kitty Hawk and Tvfanns Harbor have been invited, and a full attendance is urged, as Mrs. Swain believes it will be a valuable meeting, especially to new officers. She will install the new officers of Wanchese and Manteo. At eight o’clock on the same day she will address and install the new officers of the Elizabeth City PTA. ROAD COMMITTEE TO MEET AT MANNS HARBOR MAY 15 Melvin R. Daniels of Manteo stated this week that a joint meet ing of the road committees of the Southern Albemarle Association would be held at the Manns Harbor Ruritan Club hall at 11 a. m. Thursday, May 15th, followed by a dutch dinner at Spencer’s Case. Object of the meeting is to discuss bridges needed over Alligator Riv er and Croatan Sound. HONORARY TARHEELS ARRIVE FOR MEETING AT NAGS HEAD IN DARE Nags Head. Honorary Tar Heels from several cities were ar riving at Nags Head to attend their fourth annual get together here as guests of one of the lead ing hotels in the area. The original Honorary Tar Heels belong to one of the world’s most exclusive organizations. Created by Governor Gregg Cherry during his administration, the organisa tion has lived onward through Governor W. Kerr Scott’s adminis tration. The group which includes writ ers, newspapermen, editors, and outstanding photographers who have contributed to the publicity efforts of the State, usually gather at some spot in the State two or three times each year. They have been entertained by the manage ment of hotels in both Nags Head and Morehead City. They have also been the guests on one or more oc casions at Tom and Judy Alexan der’s famous Cataloochie Ranch in the mountains of western North Carolina. While here the group will spend their time fishing and swapping yarns. Governor Scott will be rep resented at the meeting by Charles J. Parker, director of the state ad vertising division. Bill Sharpe, who played an important role in creat ing the Honorary Tar Heels or ganization for his Chief, Gover nor Cherry, is also here to meet with the group. The meeting began Thursday and continues through Sunday. AGNES FULCHER CHOSEN “MISS DARE COUNTY’’ The patrons of the Pioneer Theatre witnessed an array of Dare county beauty on Monday night when the theatre held its thjrd annual beauty contest. Twenty seven girls participated in the contest and was of such looks that it made it extremely difficult for the judges to reach a decision, as to who would be Miss Dare County of 1952. The judges were sportsmen who were spending some time at the Carolinian Hotel, Mr. A. S. Gow, Villanova, Penna., Mr. W. D. Bene dict, Holiday Magazine, Philadel phia, Mr. W. R. Hendrie, Columbus, Ohio. The judges picked one win ner from each of the six groups brought on the stage. The winner of these groups were Miss Wanda Burrus, Miss Tanyia Dawn Tillett, Miss Agnes Fulcher, Miss Wenonia Peele, Miss Jackie Farrow, and Miss Tracy Midgett. From the six above finalists was chosen “Miss Dare County” of 1952. The judges choice after much delibration was Miss Agnes Fulcher from Buxton, N. C., with Miss Tracy Midgett from Manteo running a close sec ond. The winner received a loving cup and show passes presented by the theatre, a Catalina bathing suit presented by the Nags Head Beach Wear Shop. She will also get a trip to Elizabeth City to enter an right county contest to be held there. i A MANTEO NATIVE DIES IN BOSTON TUESDAY Carl Dallas Midgett, 48, died i suddenly at the residence in Brook line, Mass., Tuesday. He was a native of Dare Coun ty but had been living in Brook line, Mass., for the past three years. He was the son of Mrs. Mary E. Forbes Midgett and the late Apollos D. Midgett, husband of Mrs. Beverly Lander Midgett, a painter and a retired Coast Guardsman. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by one daughter, Miss Alice Lee Midgett of Brookline, Mass.; one son, 'James Midgett of Boston, Mass.; four sisters, Mrs. Annie L. Avey and Mrs. Mary E. Maginnis, both of Brookline, Mass., Mrs. Edna Layden of .Peabody ! Mass., and Mrs. Bernice Dowdy of Manteo; two brothers, Lance Lloyd Midgett of Hongham, Mass., and Mahlon D. Midgett of Manteo. Funeral services will he conduct ed Friday at 3 by Rev. Mr. Ash imore of the Manteo Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Man teo Cemetery. REBEKAHS WILL MEET MON. ' / *'«l THEODORE S. MEEKINS will be 82 years old this month, and for his age he is a most active man in Manteo. It is unusual when a man of 82 is physically and mentally able to do more work, and achieve more than many of his fellowmen who are much younger. He is the county’s first real estate man. A lifetime of experience in public af fairs and acquaintance with the county has given him a knowledge of property, and a prophetic in sight as to where development might be expected. When Dare County’s boom in real estate began some 25 years ago, Theodore Meekins was in the midst of it, buying land and selling. He knew' where to find land, and he knew how to get it. In recent months he has sold a number of tracts on Hatteras Island which may soon become developed into cottage sites. More than 20 years ago, he promoted the idea, with a number of his neighbors, of buying 900 acres of land for $lO an acre, and which now embraces the most thickly developed part of Nags Head, the locality of the Nags Header Hotel. They actually had, to borrow the money to buy the land, and money being tight, the late E. R. Daniels of Wanchese had to stand endorser on the note. People laughed at them for buying this worthless waste of naked beach, which Mr. Meekins soon be gan selling for SSO a lot and up, and he got a number of people to build cottages, which was the foundation of a big development in' the particular locality. Well, things come and things go, and today, you’ve got to pay $3,000 at least to get an ocean front lot in this area. Forgetting the real estate busi ness for the main point herein, is the remarkable achievement of a man 'B2 years old. Besides his long hours at the real estate office, one-flight up in his building down town, Mr. Meekins walks to and from home each day, several times to be near his wife who is very ill, and to whom he is very attentive and devoted. He has always been an indulgent family man and con tinues at 82 to give his wife every comfort and attention. He was born at Rodanthe in 1870 and during his long and busy life, he has served in many public posi tions. He has been Clerk of the Superior Court, N. C. Fisheries Commissioner, Member of the Board of Education, Aiderman of Manteo, Steward and District Steward in the Methodist Church, Representative two terms in the General Assembly, Delegate to Democratic National Convention, See REALTOR, Page Eight FUNERAL SERVICE FRIDAY JOHN ROBERT DUVALL Funeral services for John Rob ert Duvall, who died Thursday morning, were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock in Mt. Olivet Methodist Church at Manteo by the Rev. A. L. G. Stevenson, pas tor of Manns Harbor Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. H. R. Ashemore, pastor of Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. A large crowd attended, with many old friends present from distant towns, and former business associates from New Jersey and elsewhere. Members of the church choir sang “Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown” and “I Will Sing You A Song,” accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Rennie Williams. The casket was blanketed by a pall of white carnations, white lil eis and fern. There were many floral offerings. Pallbearers were members of the Masonic Lodge of Wanchese; Lawrence Swain, Ralph Swain, Hugh Basnight, G. O. Bonner, Melvin Daniels and H. O. Bridges. Interment was made in the Manteo Cemetery with members of the Wanchese Masonic Lodge in charge of the graveside rites. Frank Cahoon, Master of Wan chese Lodge led the services. Single Copy 74 TRAVELOGUE ON DARE COUNTY TOBE SHOWN Kay Kyzer Urges Dare Resi dents To See Movie Next Tuesday ' By AYCOCK BROWN There will be a private showing of the newly filmed Dare County travelogue movie at Pioneer Thea tre in Manteo Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, prior to the official launching of the film at the Execu tive Mansion in Raleigh, by Gov ernor W. Scott on Friday night, May 9, it is announced by Kay Kyzer, member of the board of directors of Roanoke Island His torical Association. There will be no charge of ad mission to see the movie, less than 30 minutes, and residents of Dare and adjoining counties are invited to attend the showing. Officially the invitation to attend the movie is extended by Kay Kyser, on be half of the sponsoring organization of Paul Green’s symphonic drama, The Lost Colony. “Dare—Birthplace of English- Speaking America,” is the title of the film. Actually and in a strict sense it is not a travelogue, but the colorful story of Dare County to day, with historical background settings from actual scenes in The Lost Colony and at Fort Raleigh. The attractive vacation features of the Dare Coastland and its scen ic wonders are also shown in the film. The entire Dare County area is included from Hatteras to Duck and westward to Stumpy Point and East Lake. Also included are the sports which have made the county famous primarily sportsfishing, and action shots of historical sites, such as the December 17th cele brations of the First Flight are included. The management of Pioneer Theatre, where the production will be presented to citizens of this areg and adjoining couutiaa» stated that more than 300 persons may be accomodated. Kay Kyzer promoted the idea for the film back in 1949 when he vacationed for several weeks on the~Dare Coast. He stated by tele phone today that he hoped to be here on Tuesday. OCRACOKE P.T.A. HAS SUCCESSFUL YEAR Civic Club Elects Officers and Hears From Telephone Committee April meetings of the P.T.A. and the Civic Club were devoted to election of officers for 1952-53. Chosen as president of the Civic Club was Ephriam Esham, and with him as vice-president, Jesse Garrish; as secretary, C. F. Boy ette; and as treasurer, Marvin Howard. Discussion of progress made by the committee working on telephone service for Ocracoke and of the spring and summer pro gram for mosquito control were also features of the business meet ing. Whether or not the Club will hold summer meetings is to be voted upon at the May meeting. Monford Garrish, retiring presi dent, was in charge of the P.T.A. business session, at the April meet ing on Monday the 21st. Treasur er’s report indicated yearly re ceipts of approximately SIOOO and expenditures o f approximately SBSO, with a balance at this time of about S2OO. Largest expendi tures were the purchase of a cy clorama for the recreation hall stage and Venetian blinds for the primary and elementary school rooms. In addition the P.T.A. has spent generously for library and other school needs and for replen ishment of equipment for the school kitchenette. Officers elected to serve beginning next September are-president, Mrs. Janie Taylor; vice-president, Thurston Gaskill; secretary, Mrs. Virginia Austin; and treasurer, Mrs. Doris Ballance. It was voted to dispense with busi ness at the May meeting and de vote the evening to enjoying a big pot-luck supper, after which the movie, “North Carolina Variety Vacationland” will be shown. OLD CLOTHING DRIVE IS SUCCESS IN DARE Mrs. Goldie Meekins, who with Mrs. Isabel Warren and Mrs. Fred Basnight, as a committee of the Manteo Woman’s Club, expresses gratitude on behalf of the club for the response given the drive for Old Clothes for the needy." “It ex ceeded our expectations,” she says. “We received numerous usuable garments.” If others who have not gotten around to it have garments they can spare for the needy, she requests that some member of the committee be notified.
