Coming into prominence as a

DOLPHIN COURT
ADDS SERVING
OF BREAKFAST
Crabapple Stone Fireplace,
Unusual Furnishings Dis
tinguish Dining Room
Nags Head. Something new
has been added at the Dolphin
Motor Court on the Oregon Inlet
road. It’s a breakfast room, prim
arily for guests in the court.
Others, however, can get break
fast there any time during the
morning.
To be accurate, it’s the serving
breakfasts that is new at the
Dolphin, not the room. Most of
the court’s office has been turn
ed into a breakfast room, with
room for 12 people to be served
at three large tables. The white
pine captain’s chairs, drop leaf
tables and round table centered
with a lazy Susan are of North
Carolina manufacture and so
unusual as to extract many en
thusiastic comments and ques
tions from breakfasters.
A roomy fireplace adds a cozy
note to the room, even in sum
mer when no fire is needed. Oc
cupying most of one side of the
room, the fireplace is built of
crabapple stone, with shelves of
the same material extending out
under windows at each side of
the chimney.
Come Labor Day, the Dolphin
will celebrate its first birthday
under its present management,
though the court was actually
opened the previous Fourth of
July. Mrs. Bertha Sample of
Elizabeth City is assisted in op
erating the Dolphin by her
daughter, Miss Emily J. White,
as hostess, and her son, Robert
J. White, as business manager.
Miss White and her brother are
grandchildren of the late Miles
Jenfiings, who in an earlier day
operated a blacksmith shop in
Elizabeth City and who was
widely known among residents
along the coast.
Mrs. Cora Mae Basnight of
Manteo, who has been wiith the
Dolphin since it was opened,
serves as assistant hostess. Be
sides the family, six persons are
employed.
The Dolphin has 32 units, 29
of which are for rent. Each con
sists of «. twin or double bedroom
with ceramic tile bath. The walls
are plastered and the floor is
tile.
When the breakfast idea was
put into effect recently, the kit
chen had to be slightly remodel
ed to meet the new demands on
it. Otherwise, the development
was accomplished with few
changes.
When the Dolphin was built,
ample provision was made for
parking. The units, set around a
wide U, have driveway and
parking space, and more parking
provision was made at the front,
where two entrances turn off the
road into the grounds.
Porches shade the units, and
these have proved so popular
with the guests that Mrs. Sample
plans to have them screened as
an additional convenience for
guests.
The Dolphin, on the oceanside
of the highway, has a generoif;-
beach, gently sloping to the
water.

ginia Dare Hardware Co. store
and plan to build on it.
