home for the Christmas and New
Year’s holiday season enjoyed
visits here with relatives and
friends, but have by this time re
turned to their work or homes
off the island. Mr. and Mrs. Wal
ter C. O’Neal, Sr., and Mr. and
Mrs. Van Henry O’Neal and fam
ily motored to Edenton when
Corp. Walter C. O’Neal’s furlough
was over, and from there drove
north to Philadelphia where they
visited Mr. and Mrs. John O’Neal
and to Delanco, N. J., where they
visited Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
O’Neal. Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Anderson, visiting her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Styron, re
turned to Frankfort, Indiana, to
day, Monday. Mrs. James Rober
son and Emma Bagwell, visiting
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bragg, have
returned to Washington, D. C.
All of the children of Mr. and
Mrs. Z. S. Williams, home for
part of the holidays, have return
ed, Larry to his teaching in the
Wilmington High School, N. C.,
Mr. and Mrs. Troy Williams to
Reidsville, Mr. and Mrs. Russell
Williams and daughter, Patsey,
to Norfolk, Mrs. Janice Taylor
and son, Billy Wahab Taylor, to
Norfolk.
Mr. and Mrs. Wampler and
Miss Margaret Vann visited at
the home of Mrs. Elicia Garrish.
Mr. and Mrs. Chesley Austin and
children of Winston-Salem spent
the New Year’s week with his
mother, Mrs. Harvey Wahab and
Mr. Wahab. Alpheus Gaskins,
Charlie Morris, John Puitt O’-
Neal, Elmer Gray Midgett, Mr.
and Mrs. David Styron and
daughter, Belinda, and Ikey D.
O’Neal have returned North to
their respective work and homes.
Miss Virginia Howard, who visit
ed in her brother’s home, Mr. and
Mrs. Taft Howard, has returned
to Norfolk. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie
Howard and family of Columbia,
S. C., who visited his mother,
Mrs. Tressie Howard, have re
turned home.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Howard
left on Monday with their son,
Olin Howard, to visit him and
his family in Norfolk, and from
there will go to Winston-Salem
to visit their daughter, Mrs. Ken
nedy and family. They plan to
spend a month or more there.
Mr. and Mrs. Lennie Morris of
Beaufort, and Mr. and Mrs. Gray
Willis of Harker’s Island, visited
during the holidays with Mr. and
Mrs. Ed. Wells, but have now re
turned home.
Mrs. R. S. Wahab spent part of
the holiday season with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. James M.
Edwards of Belhaven, but she has
now returned to Ocracoke. Mr.
and Mrs. Theodore Rondthaler,
spent ten days of the vacation
with Bishop Howard E. Rond
thaler in Winston-Salem, and
their daughter, Katherine, of
Duke University, was also with
them there. They returned to
Ocracoke on December 29th. Miss
Nora Edmondson, primary teach
er, who flew to Tyler, Texas, for
the holidays, returned on Sunday;
Miss Marie Hodges, who visited
her relatives in Hodges, S. C., re
turned on Saturday. School open
ed this morning, Monday, with
Albert Styron, Jr., substituting
for Mrs. Selma Spencer, who was
seriously ill at Sealevel Hospital
for ten days during Christmas
holidays. Mrs. Spencer returned
home today by plane, but will
need a period of rest and recuper
ation before resuming her teach
ing.
Mr. and Mrs. Dix Daughtery of
Chinquapin, N. C., announce the
birth of a daughter, Lori Jean,
on December 21st, at Morehead
City Hospital. Due to illness the
infant had to remain at the hos
pital and Mrs. Daughtery has
been staying at a nearby home in
Morehead City. Her aunt, Mrs.
Helena Merrill, has been with her
there.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Thorpe and
children, Fay and Tommie, of
Hawthorne, California, who visit
ed her mother, Mrs. Eleanor Bur
rus, and sisters, Mrs. Sybil Simp
son, Mrs. Monford Garrish, Mrs.
Herman Spencer, and brother,
Oscar Burrus, leaves for her
California home on Wednesday.
Thurmond Styron suffered an
attack of pneumonia at Christ
mas time and was taken to the
Marine Hospital in Norfolk. Mrs.
Styron is staying with friends in
Norfolk. Others hospitalized were
Mrs. Geneva O’Neal and Mrs.
Eliza Parsons, at Morehead City,
and Henry Ballance, at the Vet
erans Hospital in Salisbury. Mrs.
Ballance and Brenda are staying
with her mother in Hatteras.
Rev. Robert spent a
week with his parents at Granite
Falls. Friends returned with him
for a brief visit to the Island, Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph G. Goode and
children of Connelly Springs and
Miss Gabrielle Brown Goode of
Charlotte.
David Esham wishes to express
his appreciation and thanks for
the many cards and other remem
brances sent to him during his
hospitalization at Sealevel. Minus

Wildfowl hunting season has
brought a good many hunters to
Ocracoke. Beachcomber’s Club
and Green Island Club have both
had a busy season. Among others
here, staying at Wahab Village
Hotel, were A. J. Stewart, “Out
door” Editor for the Wilmington
News Journal of Wilmington,
Delaware. In all Mr. Stewart has
spent nine weeks this year at
Ocracoke and is now beginning
his first visit in 1954. Others at
Wahab Hotel were P. G. Bunn,
Col. Graham Hobbs, Bryan But
ler, Clare Joyner all of Clinton,
N. C., Mr. nad Mrs. D. L. Forrest
er of Washington, D. C., Mr. and
Mrs. Alexander Schenck of

During the holidays Mr. and
Mrs. Benjamin Swalin of Chapel
Hill spent several days at Sound
Front Inn. Mr. Swalin is the con
ductor of the North Carolina
Symphony Orchestra. Others at
Sound Front Inn included Lee
Hannah and E. G. Flanagan of
Greenville, N. C., and Barbara
Bain and Ethel Harrison of
Chapel Hill.
Corp. Sigma Willis, who flew
home from Germany, has spent
a happy holiday with his mother,
Mrs. Mosley Willis, and other
relatives and friends. He states
that the trip, by plane, from
Germany to New York was a lot
shorter than the journey from
New York City to Ocracoke. En
return flight, he will visit his
route back to New York for his
brother, Jack Willis and family,
in Washington, D. C.
During the holidays the young
people enjoyed two square
dances, one celebrating Christ
mas, the other celebrating New
Year’s Eve. Masters of ceremony
were Calvin O’Neal, Jr., and
Larry Williams. Everyone re
ports the New Year’s Eve dance
particularily was a big success.
Proceeds of the dances will be
given to the school recreation
fund.
The Susanna Class of the Meth
odist Church is scheduled to meet
Friday night, Jan. 8, with Mrs.
Tressie Howard. On Tuesday
night, the Martha Wahab Circle
meets with Mrs. Linda Farrow.
Monday night, January 11th, is
the regular supper meeting of the
Ocracoke Civic Club, 7 p.m. at
the school library.
