SAVING MONEY FOR PAINT
Columbia—The Sunday School
class of Mrs. Pearl Roughton at
the Malachi Chapel Church,
composed of children of the ages
from 8-10 have had as their pro
ject this year to save enough
money to paint their Sunday
School room. Each Sunday each
gave of pennies and nickels
saved during the week from self
denial to the paint fund.
Having saved enough to pur
chase the paint, the fathers of
the class, applied the paint with
out cost to the class and the
Sunday School room now has a
new look. With the balance of
funds in the treas. after the paint
job, enough was left for a wie
ner roast, which was held Tues
day afternoon at the Norman
Smith Legion Beach.

MRS. EFFIE ADAMS BRICK
HOUSE, postmaster at Columbia,
was honored with being selected
unanimously as “The Club Wo
man of the Year” by the Colum
bia Woman’s Club, at a meeting
held at the home of Mrs. Brick
house on Thursday, July 22. It
was the feeling of all club mem
bers without reservation that
she was the year’s most out
standing club woman. Not only
did she serve two successful
years as president of the 15th
district, but also organized the
Columbia Junior Woman's Club,
and aided in numerous other
civic and club activities, while
at the same time carrying on her
regular duties of postmaster .
The most outstanding accom
plishment of the club year was
the purchase of a lot for the ul
timate use of building a Com
munity Building, details of
Jerry Davenport.

Pauline Bateman left Monday
for Nags Head.
Mrs. R. S. Knight, Sr. who has
been under care of doctors fol
lowing an operation in Norfolk,
for the past several weeks, ar
rived home Sunday a.m. She was

craw up resolution of respect of
a deceased club member, Miss
Clara Lowry, in tribute.
The president reported that
she had raised a major portion
of SIOO., a check for which she
had sent for the purpose of hav
ing Columbia High School’s
name engraved on the memorial
plaque in the Independence Hall
at Philadelphia. A method from
which funds were secured for
the restoration of the hall, by the
General Federation of Woman’s
Clubs.
The Club adopted the High
way resolution, which was
adopted by the General Federa
tion at Denver, Colorado in June
as follows:
“WHEREAS, the General Fed
eration of Woman’s Clubs and
its member clubs have been
deeply concerned over the
growing hazards to traffic on
our highways and, also, the
need for protecting the natu
ral scenic beauty of the road
sides, therefore
RESOLVED, that the General
Federation of Women’s Clubs
in Convention assembled, June
1954, urges the Congress to
develop standards for ade
quate protection for the safety
and beauty of highways as a
requirement of government co
operative effort with States in
building highways.”
Mrs. Lloyd Davenport reported
that eighteen members had paid
dues for next year.
Mrs. John Hardison was elect
ed Treasurer for the ensueing
year.

dered her resignation as presi
dent of the club in order to ac
cept her appointment as State
public affairs chairman. Mrs.
Wm. Charles Cohoon was, by
secret ballot, selected to fill the
position as president.

and Mrs. Julian H. Swain, and
Faye Spencer, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Albert Spencer, who
