ROANOKE SCHOOL
HAS GROWN FROM
3 SMALL BLDGS.
The History of Neqro Education
on Roanoke Island Has Been
One of Progress
According to information given
by several of the old Negro peo
ple of Roanoke Island; Roanoke
High School did not have its pres
ent name prior to the early 1900’s.
Before this time three Negro
schools were used: One was locat
ed on what is known as the south
end of the Island. It was near
what was called “The Old Battle
Ground”. Another one was located
near the old Negro Baptist
Church; and was known as the
Middle District. The third on? was
located on the northern end of the
Island. Several teachers of these
schools included Mrs. Kate Traf
ton, Mrs. Brinn, Mrs. Palmer,
Charb’e Midgett and John Barring
ton. Each of the buildings so re
lated were one room buildings, and
later on the people decided to get
better schools, which resulted into
the replacement of the three
buildings, by building one two
story building in 1901 on the pres
ents school site.
During this early period the
school was known as Roanoke
Academy. Some of the teachers
who taught during this consoli
dated period were: Mrs. Ella M.
Dunbar and Oscar Woodley. Mem
bers of the early school commit
tees were W. C. Bowser, W. B.
Ashbee, J. R. Garrett, Isaiah
Mann, J. S. Wescott, D. H. Hop
kins and T. T. Scarborough which
all were present when the first
deed whs recorded. The trustees
were D. H. Hopkins, W. B. Ash
bee, J. W. Midgett, J. S. Wescott,
Levi Tillett, H. Mann, W. S. Bow
ser T. T. Scarborough, J. H. Berry
and J. W. Woodley. These men
guided this two story set-up and
developed it into both a school and
recreation center for the commu
nity. Later this school was turned
over to the county and state and
became known as Roanoke School,
which came about during the time
of available Rosenwald Funds.
Following this turn of events C.
C. Carter came into being and set
up a high school which lead to the
present name of Roanoke High
School.
In late 1952 a new structure was
completed which all now enjoy
which is the third in a series of
buildings. In the present building
is to be found three classrooms,
lunchroom, kitchen and all-purpose
room.
A beautiful campus, electric
bells, filing cabinet, lunchroom
chairs, new refrigerator, flag
pole and an active P.T.A. headed
by Mrs. Ernie McClease is credit
ed to the present administration.
Faculty members are: W. E.
Hall, B. S., M. S. and M. A. De
grees, Mrs. L. T. Boone, A. B. De
gree, Mrs. E. A. Bethea, A. B. De
gree. Committee Members: Ma
loyd Scarborough, Chairman, M. C.
Collins, Secretary, Seward Sim
mons, Coordinator.
