DANIEL BENJAMIN GARRISH,
OCRACOKE CITIZEN DIES
Daniel Benjamin Garrish, age
’ 76, native of Ocracoke Island, died
ion May 20 at the Veteran’s Hos
' pital, Kecoughtan, Va., following
I a long illness. Funeral services
' were held at the Ocracoke Meth
i odist Church on Monday morning
at ten thirty, with Rev. W. R.
; Hale officiating. Interment was in
the Community cemetery. Except
for service in the U. S. Navy from
1 1899 to 1903, Mr. Garrish spent
' his entire life at Ocracoke. He
1 was married August 19, 1903 to
, Annie Lee Scarborough, who sur
j vives him. Surviving children are
: Mrs. Howard O’Neal of Ocracoke
I and Mrs. Graydon Ring of High
! Point, three grandchildren and two
' great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs.
’ Graydon Ring and children came
i to the Island on Sunday for the
I funeral services, staying with her
sister, Mrs. Howard O’Neal.
come true. Leaving the shed-room
kitchen on the back of the house
j she will soon be working happily
■ in the new room which not only
: provides the morning sun but an
‘ ever changing view of Kitty Hawk
Bay. Mr. Meekins didn’t think
; much of Ida’s asking for the new
I kitchen to be built on the front of
' the house, but like many husbands
* gave in to her whim. Mrs. Meekins
I is more fortunate than most wo
| men for her husband can and is
' doing all the building, wiring and
■ plumbing.
The 11 x 14 foot room was built
during the winter. On March 19,
fortified with the latest ideas, I
, visited the Meekins and discussed
' arrangement of equipment and
' cabinets. Work areas for washing,
cooking, and serving were plan
ned, and ample storage provided
for these plus space for cleaning
equipment and all-weather acces
sories. I am sure Mr. and Mrs.
Meekins will be glad to show any
of you their dream-kitchen. They
live at the end of the pavement
in Colington woods. Surely will be
worth your time to visit them.
