' A*y.' wynteaig The new office and library build ing for the Grand Lodge of An cient, Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina is to be located on a 5-acre site near the city limits of Raleigh on U. S. Highways 70 and 15-A North. The announce ment of the award of the contracts was made-by Watson N. Sherrod, Enfield, Chairman of the Building Committee. J. M. Thompson Com pany, General Contractors, Ra- leigh, is contractor for all phases of the work. The exact amount of the contract was not given (but is understood to be approximately $250,000.00). The building was de signed by Leslie N. Boney, Archi tect, of Wilmington, North Caro lina. Dr. Charles H. Pugh, Gas tonia, is Grand Master of Masons in North Carolina; and Wilbur Mc- Iver, Raleigh, is Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge. The building will be of modern design and employ the latest ma terials in its makeup. The pre dominant exterior material is crab orchard stone from Tennessee quarries, and limestone from In diana. There will be large tinted glare reducing glass areas on each facade. The ground floor will contain li brary, museum, archive areas and mechanical equipment roqms. A small refreshments area will be provided for the convenience of office personnel and visitors. The main floor will house the executive offices for the Grand Lodge. The Grand Master’s suite, on the south ern end of the building, contains a private office and a conference room for 30 or more persons. The Grand Secretary and his staff will occupy the opposite end of the building, which contains three in dividual offices, a conference room, and a large clerical area. Mr. and Mrs. Carson Meekins and Mrs. Tom Wise spent Tuesday in Norfolk. Eddie Leigh Hooper is visiting Mr. and Mrs. John Zachery in Nor folk. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Midgett and sons of Norfolk spent the week end here with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Midgett. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Mason and children of Norfolk are spending a week with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Midgett. Mrs. Junette Crank and son of Poplar Branch are spending some time with Mrs. Crank’s mother, Mrs. Annie Payne. Miss Sallie Best is spending a week with her aunt in New Bern. The main stair and elevator lobby with marble walls will be centrally located in the building and will open directly into the spacious library and lounge. For special gatherings and committee meetings this area will accommo date approximately 200 persons. Included on the main floor will be ladies’ and men’s lounges. A special feature of the lobby will be the bronze emblem of the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of North Caro lina. The library will be equipped with custom designed furniture, draperies, and floor covering. An artist has been selected to execute murals for the walls depicting various stages in the 168-year his tory of the Grand Lodge of Masons in North Carolina. Provision of the main floor and the ground floor library areas will permit considerable expansion of the facilities and the use of the Grand Lodge Library. An informal ground breaking held on Friday afternoon culminat ■ ed two years of planning and de signing. Laying of the cornerstone I by the Grand Lodge is scheduled j to take place in the early fall, and i construction is expected to be complete in the spring of 1956. Miss Hooper is the former Miss Lois Johnson of South Mills. Mr. Hooper is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Hooper. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Meekins announce the birth of their second child, first son, on Hospital, Kentuck. Mrs. Meekins is the former Miss Myra Best, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Best. Mr. and Mrs. John Zachery an nounce the birth of a son on June 26, at Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Va. Mrs. Jachery is the former Miss Catherine Hooper, daughter of Mrs. Florine Hooper and the late L. Mildred Midgette presided in the absence of the president, and Jazania Herbert acted' as secre tary. The opening hymn was “Come Thou Almighty King” after which Rev. Dan C. Meadows offer-’ ed prayer. Erline Tandy, Frisco, extended the welcome to which Betty Rollin son, Buxton, responded. Jackie Farrow, Rodanthe, gave the devotional on the thought of “What Kind of Christiah are You?” Miss Virginia Austin, Hat teras, sang “I Would Be True.” The offering was taken by Helen Gray and Claudia Williams of Avon. A challenging panel over Radio Station WMYF was presented by Zelda Austin, Erline Tandy, Johnny Deitz and Wayne Bas night of Frisco on the topic, “True Friendship costs Something”. Dur ing the business session Subdis trict officers elected were Erline Tandy, treasurer, and Donna Hehl, publicity chairman. All churches reported havin elected a delegate to attend A.C.S. in Durham at Duke University in August. Frisco M.Y.F. received the at tendance banner. The next meeting will be in September at Hatteras, at which time* we hope to have a missionary on furlough from India with us.
