There will be homemade cakes, pies, cookies, and handmade articles. The proceeds will go to the build ing fund for the much needed edu cational building. GASTON TECH TO OFFER TECHNICIANS COURSE By PEGGY CHEARS Raleigh. One of industry’s major needs in North Carolina is for engineering technicians who are specifically trained to assist engineers in the design of machin ery and equipment. In the newly-organized two year mechanical and production technology course opening this fall at the Gaston Technical Insitute in Gastonia, students will gain speci fic training in tools and machines. The training will emphasize de sign and maintenance of produc tion equipment as well .as the mass production of goods produced through machine operations. The curriculum, planned and approved by the North Carolina State College School of Engineer ing, includes engineering drawing, algebra, English, physics, trigino metry, and general shop during the first year. Subjects for the second year’s work cover machine shop, tool and die design, statics and strengths of material, descriptive geometry, materials, electric circuits and ma chines, machine drafting, produc tion technology, personnel super vision, technical reports, and pro duction and quality control. The development of new and improved machinery in the state’s expanding industries makes this an important and growing field, for the technician. High school graduates interest ed in enrolling in this course or in electrical, electronics, or civil technology should write the Gas ton Technical Institute, Box 1399, Gastonia, N. C. Catalogues on the school’s new curriculum will be mailed upon request. MANTEO GETS 16-7 WIN OVER SWAN QUARTER'S LITTLE LEAGUERS MON. Swan Quarter’s Little League baseball team went down to defeat 16-7 Monday night at Manteo at the hands of the Manteo Little League team, although in the fifth inning Swan Quarter trailed by on ly 1 run, 8-7. Manteo scored 8 more runs in the bottom of the fifth however to win by a very safe margin. The scoring began in the sec ond inning when Sonny Jennette, Carlton Harris, and David O’Neal crossed the plate for Swan Quarter. In the bottom of the second, Man teo brought in 7 runs, by Ray White, Dickie Burrus, Paul Mayo, Freddie Combs, Francis Combs, Bennie O’Neal, and Eddie Hooper. A home run by Roy O’Neal of Swan Quarter in the top of the fourth made the score 7-4, then a run scored by Chris Payne in the bottom of the fourth made it 8-4. Fifth inning runs by Troy Mayo, Don Cahoon, and Jennette brought Swan Quarter up to 7 runs. The bottom of the fifth saw Freddie Combs, Francis Combs, O’Neal, Payne, Hooper, Butch Johnson, White, and Burrus score for Man teo, making the score 16-7, the final tall. O’Neal pitched 4-1/3 innings for the winners, allowing 9 hits, strik ing out 6, and walking 5 Swan Quarter batters. The remaining 1-2/3 innings were pitched by Bur rus, who struck .out 4 batters, al lowing no hits and no walks. Two errors were charged against Man teo. Jennette pitched the full 5 inn ings for Swan Quarter, giving up 10 hits, striking out 4 batters and walking 4. Eight errors were charged against Swan Quarter. White was again Manteo’s lead ing hitter, scoring a triple and 2 singles; Burrus had a triple and a single, Mayo had a double and a single, Freddie Combs had 2 sin gles, and Francis Combs had 1 single. In addition to his home run, Roy O’Neal of Swan Quarter got 2 sin gles; David O’Neal had a triple and a double, Butch Carawan had a triple and a single, and Jimmy Dunbar and Mayo each had 1 sin gle.
