NEW N. C. SENATOR HAS
LIVED A BUSY LIFE
E-&
North Carolina’s new Senator,
B. Everett Jordan of Saxapahaw,
has been in the U. S. Capital only
a short while, but already he has
a reputation of being full of
energy and quick to learn his as
signments. \
For him, this is nothing new,
because Everett Jordan, a textile
manufacturer and the son of a
circuit-riding Methodist preacher,
has been unusually active all of
his life and continually broadening
his business and political activities.
Senator Jordan was born at
Ramseur in Randolph County Sep
tember 6, 1896, and his family
lived in a number of places while
he was growing up—the Henrietta-
Caroleen community of Rutherford
County, Kernersville, Walkertown,
Marion, Lenoir and Morganton, to
name a few.
Young Everett left the family at
Morganton, where he played base
ball with a boy there by the name
of Sam J. Ervin Jr., and went off
to Trinity College to further his
education.
Tn 1915 he left Trinity College
“looking for a job” and ended up
working in an uncle’s jewelry store
in Wellington, Kansas.
The next few years clicked off
for the youthful Tar Heel at a
fast pace. He joined the Tank
Corps of the U. S. Army, served
in France with the doughboys, re
turned to the Kansas jewelry store,
and ended up back home in North
Carolina in 1921.
In 1924, he was married to the
former Katherine McLean, a Gas
tonia school teacher.
Three years later, with a son,
Ben E. Jr., the Jordans, full of
hope and eagerness about the fu
ture, moved to the mill village of
Saxapahaw in Alamance County.
It was here that Everett Jordan
went on his own in the textile
business. He came to Saxapahaw
to open an old textile mill that
had been closed for four years.

DAKE LIBRARY SERVICE
CURTAILED DURING SUMMER
The Dare County library will not
open on Monday nights during
June, July, and August, necessary
because of the absence of two
members of the library staff, Mrs.
Ward, librarian, will attend sum
mer school to complete her ilbrary
course, and Mrs. Roush, the cleri
cal assistant, to be with her chil
dren during school vacation. The
library will be in the capable hands
of Mrs. L. L. Gibbs, the former
librarian of the Tyrrell County
library.
This week the librarian inter
viewed several teachers of the
Manteo School to offer the libra
ry’s cooperation in a summer read
ing proffl-am for children. For
many summers pupils from other
sections of the country have been
bringing lists from their schools
to the Dare library, and using
the facilities of the library to meet
their reading requirements. The
library urges teachers and pupils
to follow this system of summer
reading.
