GLIMPSES OF TH E PAS T By CAROLYN LLOYD In a gathering which included teachers as well as parents, some of them both, the conversation turned to the imminent opening of school. Someone asked the inevit able question, “Are children any worse than they used to be?” The answer from most of the teachers was, “Not worse, just dif ferent.” From the reminiscing that fol lowed, it is obvious that the beha vior of students, as far as adoles s cent horseplay is concerned, is far better than it used to be. The' story was told of the two boys (now both perfectly respectable 1 grown men, who climbed up into ‘ the belfry of the old school build -1 ing here, pulled the ladder up ' after them, and sat there alter ’ nately ringing the bell and waving at passers-by. Imagine the frus tration of the teachers and the > principal who couldn’t reach them. Then there were the boys who ' one day gathered up all the Latin books and threw them out the widow, having dropped the books, ' they were advised forthwith to 1 drop the course, which was prob ably what they wanted all the • time. I Such cut-ups in the old days were often bundled off to board ing school by desperate parents; ' though sometimes the parents or ’ the principal found the proper dis ciplinary measures to save the school from destruction. Somehow most of these boys turned into solid citizens who would be horri fied at the idea of their sons do ing the same things. Misbehavior among students to day usually takes a more subtle form, and sometimes the subtle is more difficult to deal with. There is always the comforting thought, however, that every generation eventually grows up. There was humorous reminiscing about teachers, too, of course. One whose petticoat always showed may have been a bit puzzled when she received a Christmas present from some of the most mischiev ous boys in her class. It was a purple petticoat. Purple lingerie : was stylish in those days; and I, too, had a teacher who always showed a touch of purple when she sat—only it wasn’t her petti coat. Now it is about time for a new year. Before it is over, some pupil will do something that he thinks is very daring and original. It won’t be though. Some teacher will probably remember having done the same thing himself and be ready to cope with the situation.
