NEW NATIONAL SEASHORE
IS OUTER BANKS MAGNET
Free Booklet on Area Availab'e By
Writing State Travel Bureau, P.
O. Box 2719, Raleigh
Hatteras. The new Cape
Hatteras National Seashore, being
developed rapidly by the National
Park Service, is a new magnet
drawing increased travel to the
once isolated Outer Banks of North
Carolina.
During July of this year alone,
there were 99,330 visitors to the
Hatteras Seashore, up 9,728 from
July of last year.
Paved road all the way on Hat
teras and Ocracoke Islands; step-1
ped up ferry service (State oper
ated, toll-free) across Oregon and
Hatteras Inlets, and new motels
and restaurants have vastly en
hanced the accessibility and com
forts of the Outer Banks.
A new booklet with latest in
formation on the Outer Banks,,
what’s there, how to get there, and
information about accommodations,
has just been published and is
free on request to the State Travel
Bureau, P. O. Box 2719, Raleigh,
N. C.
Coquina Beach in the National
Seashore features modern beach
architecture that is sure to be
widely copied.
Deep-sea fishing is fabulous in
this area, very close to the Gulf
Stream. Charter boats range from
marinas at Oregon Inlet and Hat
teras in quest of blue and white
marlin, sailfish, sword fish and
other big game.
Near the resorts of Nags Head,
Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills,
north of the Seashore Park, is
Roanoke Island, where the first
English settlements in America
were attempted, and resulted in
the fabled “Lost Colony” and the
Wright Memorial, marking the
first flight and birthplace of mod
ern aviation.
LOUISBURG PARTY GETS
PLENTY TROUT, CROAKER
George P. Fostor and party of
Louisburg, fishing Wednesday
morning, with Capt. Chick Crad
dock of Manns Harbor, boated 112
croakers and gray trout, mixed
half and half. They were fishing
just north of Mashoes light over
shell bottom in deep water. Many
other good catches have been made
recently in the vicinity of Umstead
Bridge over Croatan Sound, and
prospects are for continued good
catches, with speckled trout, rock,
flounder and other species begin
ning soon in heavy numbers.

"CUSTARD A LA MODE—
A WONDERFUL DESSERT”
' Custard with ice cream? Certainly it’s different, but ever so good.
Both are smooth and creamy, both so rich in important dairy foods.
Bake the custards in ring molds, center each with a scoop of the ice
cream. Then top with sweetened crushed raspberries, and await the
rush of compliments!

DOCK ’
(Continued from Page One)
' and you can kill the last of every-
I thing, just like has happened to
■ our deer, and is happening to our
1 fishing.
People are never willing to stop,
’ however, until the last one is gone.
Then they howl for the taxpayers
to put ’em back.
The good Lord put a plenty of
everything here for everybody, if
i they just wouldn’t waste it.
But seems like when we have
plenty, we just pick out the best
and throw the rest away. After
awhile we don’t have any left.
Why the sawmills are paying
i high prices for sorry-looking saw
logs which my father wouldn’t cut
for firewood when I was a boy.
I Nobody thought about saving
i things like firewood, fish or game
; in those days. They thought every
thing was going to last forever.
Some folks now will argue that
passing laws to save what we
have, caused the Lord to take
away the game and fish, and isn’t
it strange that human beings can
be so foolish as to talk such rot.
Fact is, if we hadn’t any re
! strictions all of it would’ve been
j gone long ago.
j Trouble is, we have no enforce
| ment of the laws we have. Our
' own state officials hold meetings
■ j and have a lot to say about what
■ they are going to do to build up
I the oyster and fishing, industry.
1 Every year or two they hold meet
ings and review surveys, and hear
I experts, and then announce they
I are starting off on a big program
1 to build up our resources.
| Everytime I read one of these
announcements, I know wl]at it
I means. Mr. Editor, there never has
been a time in the past 60 years
when any improvement has been
noted in the fishing industry.
The proof is in the solid fact
that the industry has grown stead
ily poorer and poorer. We don’t
get as many fish, and if half the
people were now fishing that fish
ed 25 years ago, they’d all starve
to death.
Our trouble is we have as near
no law enforcement as it is pos
sible to have. Almost nothing is
done to protect the fish, oysters 1
and game.
You know the reason of course.
It’s all in politics. Too many offi
cials are afraid of a few votes.
Yours for more backbones.
