She will welcome news of Columbia and Tyrrell County < • TWO FAMILIES IN TYRRELL COUNTY HOLD RE-UNION Columbia—The 18th annual re union of the Armstrong and Alex ander families was held Sunday at the Norman Smith Memorial Le gion Beach with about 200 of the two families attending. The program began with a re ligious service, as is the usual cus tom, with the message and prayer brought by the Reverend H. P. Alexander of Tennessee. Hymn “standing of the Promises” was sung in unison. A short business sessions was held so reports of those who had died since last reunion, and of those families who might need spiritual or financial assistance from the organization, and for election of officers for the next year, with Edison Ward, President, bringing welcome. Officers elected were: E. P. Ward, President; Edward Swain, Vice President, Mrs. Verdie Alex ander, Secretary and Treasurer; Place Committee: Mrs. Lois Swain and Mrs. J. Phillip Swain; Sun shine Committee: Mrs. Selma Al exander, Mrs. Mittie Ward and Mrs. Lois Reynolds; Program Com mittee: Mr. and Mrs. Victor Alex ander. The Alexander banner was given to Mrs. Annie Alexander of Tar boro, and the Armstrong banner to Mrs. H. E. Ward of Columbia, Route one. Fellowship was promoted over a picnic lunch, after which games and sports were played. The next meeting was set for the third Sun day in August 1959. MRS. CORA ELIZA MORRIS DIES IN TYRRELL COUNTY Columbia—Funeral services for Mrs. Cora Eliza Morris, 82 ’of Route One, who died after a lin gering illness at the Columbia Hos pital Saturday morning at 9:30 were held Sunday August 24th at the Malachi’s Chapel Free-Will Baptist Church by the Reverend Hubert Ryan, Minister, assisted by the Reverend Ray Everton. The choir sang: “Abide With Me,” “Rock of Ages” and “Never Grow Old.” Pall bearers: Lee R. Bai-nes, Harry P. Swain, Alton Basnight, Robert Midgett, Edmond Phelps, Harold Spencer. Interment was in the church, cemetery. She was the widow of Thomas Morris, and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Swain; mem ber of the Cabin Swamp Christian Chureh; native and lifelong resi dent of Tyrrell County. She is survived by one son Ray mond Morris, and one daughter, Mrs. Henry Woodley both of Route One Columbia; one sister, Mrs. Winnie Cox of Hopewell, Va. and| seven grandchildren. Hom 100% Grain Noutrai Spirits. 00 Woof. > g L u t * jv < MUCH INTEREST IN 4-H POULTRY PROJECT HELD IN TYRRELL TUESDAY Columbia The first Tyrrell County 4-H pullet project tour was held Tuesday morning, leaving the Agriculture Building at nine o’clock. C. F. Parish, Extension Poultry Specialist from State Col lege acted as judge. The first prize blue ribbon win ner of $lO. was 4-H member Mike Cohoon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Her man W. Cohoon of Route three. There were five receiving red rib bons, indicated by a prize of s7i each: Hal Norman, Wayne Nor man, Hope Morris, Avery Morris and Thomas Spruill.' Each 4-H members was allotted by the FCX 100 pullets of Honeg ger White Leghorns and Harco Orchard Reds breeds bred to lay and were allowed one year to pay, to introduce the value of poultry raising to these future farmers. Prizes were also awarded by the FCX. On this tour C. F. Parish gave information on laying flock man agement, egg grading etc. The home project of each of the partici pants were visited along with the commercial laying operation owned by R. G. McLaughlin and Weston Walker’s egg grading machine. The tour and project was put on by the 4-H personnel, Murray L. Goodwin, Assistant Farm Agent and Mrs. Elsie Edwards, Assistant Home Agent. Others accompany ing were Farm Agent H. H. Harris and Henry C. Devenport and Wes ton Walker representing the FCX. TYRRELL BOARD BUYS HOPKINS PLACE FOR A PUBLIC LIBRARY Columbia—The Tyrrell County Commissioners in a special meet ing Friday, voted to purchase the building and lot on Main Street, opposite the High School, known as the Ella Hopkins place, for a public library and other purposes the board may direct, for $4,750., an amouht less that the estimate for repairs and addition to the present library building. The un expended amount appropriated for library repairs and moneys avail able from the ABC funds which had not been appropriated are to be used for this purchase. The present library is a former county jail much too small and in bad repair and and stands jn an | obscure position on the back of the County Court House property, I with limited access. Complications las to its repair arose when the Town of Columbia —owners of the building—agreed to render a re stricted deed to the present site to the county with the stipulation that it be used henceforth solely for library purposes. On Aug. 3, 1942, Mildred A. McAfee became the first woman I ever to be commissioned in the Navy. TYRRELL LEGION POST INVITING CROWD SUNDAY Norman Smith Post Has 30th Anniversary; Urges Other Posts to Visit Commander J. W. Everett of Norman Smith Post, No. 182, American Legidn in Columbia is issuing a general invitation to all legionaires in Tyrrel and neighbor ing counties, to join with them Sunday. Aug. 31 at their legion beach and picnic grounds five miles north of Columbia. The occa sion is the 30th anniversary of the post. The schedule is a service by lo cal ministers and church choirs 11:30 to 12:30 followed by a bas ket picnic lunch, and other activi ties. There will be swimming and water sports. The Auxiliary president is Mrs. Mae Carawan, and this organiza tion is aiding the celebration. All Legionaires and wives are urged to come and bring a picnic lunch. Commander Everett says the post was organized 30 years ago by a Beaufort County Post, with charter members from Tyrrell and Washington Counties. “Membership grew from the orig inal 15 to over 100, during the ensuing years several worthwhile community projects were initiated and sponsored. Some members moved away, a few passed on into the great be yond, however, the majority of the original members still live in this area and carry on. Then came World War 11, sons and daughters picked, up the old weapons of war and carried on, many returned; many did not, veterans that did return joined the Legion and put new life and vitality in the com munity. Henry Smith and wife donated a water front lot on Albe marle Sound, in memory of their son, a World War II casualty. The members with the aid of friends cleared the land and constructed buildings. Considerable improve ments have been made since origi nal construction. “The legion Beach as it is com monly known, is a place of recrea tion for young and old, ft is used for family reunion, church picnics, civic gatherings, and general rec reation area for the young people.” I MRS. BALLARD HONORED AT DINNER IN TYRRELL Columbia—Mrs. W. A. Williams, honored Mrs. Mae Ballard, of Co lumbia, sister and house guest of Mrs. Effie A. Brickhouse, at an outdoor dinner Thursday, evening. The buffet or picnic luncheon was served from a table spread with a black and white plaid cloth, and centered with white garden flowers. Hor d’ ouvres of stripped carrots, tomato juice, pickles and olives; golden brown fried chick en, devilled eggs, potato salad, home style baked beans with mo lasses, hot rolls, butter, apple cob bler, hot coffee and iced tea were the tempting treats. Seated in a semicircle with indi vidual standing trays, Mrs. T. W. Armstrong, Mrs. B. Ray Cohoon. Mrs. J. P. Alexander, Mrs. C. Earl Cohoon, Mrs. T. K. Yerby Sr., Mrs. Effie A. Brickhouse, Mrs. Ballard and Mrs. Williams ate under Hie moonlight, against the backdrop of a lovely weening willow tree circled around with a profusion of marigolds and other blooming per ennials. GUM NECK PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Shelbourn Wil liams of Norfolk were here Sat urday. Keith Ward and Grace Williams of Norfolk spent the week end here. Henry Cohoon of Ft. Bragg spent the week end with relatives. Mrs. Ornhia Payne spent Thurs day in Goldsboro. Miss Mildred Cohoon of Fair field visited relatives here Sunday. Mrs. Willie Smith and children are visiting relatives and friends in Norfolk. Mrs. Belvin Everton of Norfolk spent some time here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Weatherly. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Sawyer and son Roy spent a few days in Nor folk, Va. Beach and Ocean View visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Williams spent Wednesday in Edenton. Glenn Jones of Norfolk is here visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Basil Cohoon saw .the “Lost Colony” Sunday night. Mrs. Doris Cohoon and Mrs. G. W. -Everton spent Friday in Nor folk. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Cohoon and family of Portsmouth were here with relatives for the week end. Amor Cowell and children and Bertie Cohoon spent Sunday in Engelhard. R. R. Birthday Party ' Miss Dotty Combs celebrated her eighth birthday Friday after noon at her home in Gum Neck. Thirteen children attended. Howett spent the week end at Nags Head. ■ The Civil term of Superior Court which opened Monday morning in Tyrrell County, Judge Henry Stevens presiding, ended before noon, with no cases tried due to the attorneys being tied up in other courts. A case of L. R. Fore man and son vs. Rodney Brick house was non-suited, but a ruling made that another suit might be started in 12 months. Mr. and Mrs. Slaude Spruill, Mr. and Mrs. H. Earl Sexton went by boats to Manteo Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Borden McClees and daughter Carol spent Tuesday in" Jamesville, visiting her mother, Mrs. Ange. Chris Yerby was honored on his ninth birthday Saturday by a din ner given by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T. K. Yerby, Sr. Guests were Wayne Smith, Billie Davenport and Karen Yerby. Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Bridgeman spent the week end with their son, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Bridgeman at Buckroe Beach, Va. They were accompanied home by their grand children, Kay and Maurice Bridge man. A highway sign indicating to the visitor that there are a Woman's Club and a Junior Woman’s Club organizations in the town has been erected at the east end of the new bridge by the president of the first organization, Mrs. D. M. Bridgeman. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Farr and daughter Mary Hobson of Greens boro, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Pritchitt this week. Andy Phillips, son of Mr. and Mrs. A Gregg Phillips of Win ston-Salem (the former Miss Mary Martha Cobb) visited his aunt, Mrs. S. C. Chaplin, this week. Miss Gail Cohoon spent the week end at Nags Head. Michael Griffin is home from covered with a white spread. Pink plates, cups and napkins helped to carry out the color scheme. Devil food cake, vanilla ice cream, mints and orange drinks were served. Presents were opened by Dotty. The children played games. Attending were: Farra Hassell. Shirley Kay Voliva, Gary Voliva, Tommy Cohoon, Arnette Cohoon Laura White, Fay Jones, Michel Berry, Charles Liverman, Brenda Howett and Donnie Combs. Mrs. Annie Sykes is home after spending most of the summer at Morehead City with her sister, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Oglesby. Mrs. I. M. Bailey of Raleigh and Miss Pauline Hassell of Eden ton were guests this week of Miss Eva Bateman. Mrs. Bailey is the former Miss Ida Thompson of Co lumbia. Mr. and Mrs. Prescott May daughter Carol of Leesville, S. C., have returned to their home after a visit with Mrs. May’s mother, Mrs. Birdie Owens. Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow W. Grif fin and son Brack of Nashville visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Williams this week. Mrs. Dan K. Hamilton (the for mer Miss Carol Cobb), and son Kirk, who have just returned from Libya, where her husband was em ployed as a geologist with the Standard Oil Co. are visiting her aunt, Mrs. S. C. Chaplin. The “Singspiration” held quar terly on the fifth Sunday evenings, when all chureh denominations in Tyrrell County meet for inspira tion in fellowship and song, will be held Sunday evening at 8:00 o’clock at the Sound Side Free- Will Baptist Church. The public is cordially invited to join in the service. RETURN FROM BAGHDAD Mr. and Mrs. George Harden burgh who have recently return ed from Baghdad where Mr. Har denburgh has been engaged in con struction work for the Iraqi gov ernment, have been spending sev eral days at Nags Head. Mrs. Hardenburgh is the former. Sun shine Mann of Belhaven, and the couple keep their residence in Washington, N. C. After an 18 months residence in Arabia, they are glad to be back home. VISITORS ON NAGS HEAD Mr. and Mrs. George M. Kelley, Jr., and son, George 111, of Nor folk; Dr. and Mrs. Hudson G. Kel ley and sons, Tommie and Michael, of Indianapolis, Ind., recently spent two weeks at Nags Head. While there they were visited fre quently by the Rev. and Mrs George M.
