The picture is an ocean scene of this area, with sand hills and beach grass in the fore ground. There are now two pictures by local artists in the art collection, Mrs. James Bardin having present ed one of hers several years ago. Since tourists and natives fre quently ask for local art, the li brary is urging other artists in Dare County to contribute at least one picture to form a local depart ment of the Harwood art collec tion. Mrs. Georgia Harwood, retired librarian, began the collection of pictures in 1941 in order to famil iarize people with the reproduc tions of the treasures in museums, which are not readily accessible to the majority of Dare County residents. These pictures range from the art of the cave man through ancient art of the East to the modern art of Europe nad America. Some pictures are in expensive books, the gift of the Bollingen Foundation. These do not circu late; however many portfolios and framed pictures are available for home use. Among the books are histories of art, lives of painters and crit ical studies. A good place to begin reading is with the over-all picture in THE STORY OF ART by E. Gombrich, which may be followed -by Thomas Craven’s MEN OF ART and his MODERN ART. Painting is an ideal hobby from kindergarten to old age. The ver iest beginner can have fun by fol lowing the steps given in Norman Garbo’s DRAW UP AN EASEL and Paul Hartley’s HOW TO PAINT, to mention only two of the How-To-Do-It-Books.
