GARDENING
and FARMING
IN DARE
By J. L. REA, Co. Agt.
Malcolm Ernst, son of Mr. and
Mrs. William Ernst, who lives
near Manteo, will soon have a 4-H
poultry project. Through the en
couragement of his parents, Mal
colm has become interested in poul
try. The Ernsts are now construct
ing a modern, up-to-date pole type
poultry house. This house will
house 500 grown hens.
Although the Ernsts hope their
project will turn out to be a pro
fitable one, Mr. Ernst says he ex
pects his son, Malcolm, to gain lots
of valuable experience through
working with this poultry project.
Wildlife is a 4-H project being
studied in this month’s 4-H Club
meetings. A series of slides on the
subject is being presented. We are
making a special effort to point
out that wildlife plays an impor
tant part in the economy of Dare.
Many thousands of dollars are
spent each year by hunters who
come into Dare County to hunt
for game.
Several Club members from each
Club have received Bi-Color Les
pedeza plants and also the seed
mixture sponsored by the Wildlife
Resources Commission. We are
urging 4-H’ers to plant these ma
terials where they have a good lo
cation.
Willis Daniels, of Wanchese is ;
going to try a new garden corn
this year. Daniels sells most of his
vegetables on the beach. He needs
a good corn variety for the late
summer. I suggested that he try
1-0-1 W variety. This variety was
developed in Texas by the Asgro
Seed Co. It has a very tight 1
shuck and is draught resistant. 1
It dones not have the eating '
qualities of the early sweet corns,
but we believe it has a place in
this county. The tight shuck pre
vents worms fx-om getting in the
corn. This alone will make it pop- <
ular in this section.
Mrs. Emily Smith, of East Lake, 1
is treating her garden for nema
todes. Upon examination last fall, 1
we noticed that Mrs. Smith had a ’
severe infestation of these pests in
her garden. She said that her gar
den did poorly last year and wants
to coiTect this trouble.
We have given Mrs. Smith
enough Soil Fume to treat a good
part of her gai-den. Her garden has
been wet this spring, but we have
advised her that she will still prof
it by tx-eating the soil even if she
has to plant late.
