Hooper—others visiting the Hoopers are Mrs. CONTEST ON 4TH TO CHOOSE MISS INDEPENDENCE Expected to Be One of Most In teresting Features of Cel ebration Competion will be keen for the title of “Miss Independence”, chos ' en during the Fourth of July cele bration in Belhaven. A number of Belhaven’s attractive girls will vie for the title, and it is expected that they will have competition from other communities. Entries ■ to date are Misses Annette Noble, Becky Lupton, Roberta Taylor,, i Shirley Liverman, and Betty June Griffin. Two of the girls are al ready title holders. Miss Lupton was chosen queen of the Beaufort County basketball tournament held in Washington, and Miss Noble ; was crowned Festival Queen at the annual Spring Festival held at the John A. Wilkinson High School in May. “Miss Independence” will be chosen at a contest to be held at the Community Center at 2:00 P.M. on the . Fourth and will be crowned that night at a dance. Miss Pam Voliva, last year’s winner, is ex pected to be on hand to crown her successor, who will recieve a beau tiful trophy. The two runners-up will receive cash prizes of ten and five dollars. Word has been received by Rus sell Johnston, chairman of the cele bration for the sponsoring Ameri can Legion Post 249, that the U. S. Army will send a float to partici pate in the parade. Local organiza tions are now preparing their floats and the parade is expected to be an unusually colorful one. Estelle Wood of Norfolk—Lt. Com. and Mrs. Harry Midgette of Wash ington, D. C. Mrs. Malker is Mrs. Austin’s sister. Mrs. Shirley Shannon of Man teo visited her grandmother and aunt, Mrs. Josephine Gray and Mrs. Melvina Whidbee. CLAUDE C. JONES 83 SATURDAY, DINNER SUNDAV Claude C. Jones, one of Roanoke Island’s finest citizens, was 83 on Saturday of this week, and he was entertained at a family dinner in his honor on Sunday. Attending were Mrs. W. S. Meekins, Mrs. Josie Ferebee, Mrs. Mabel Evans Jones, the family of Lonnie Jones. Mr. Jones, well known through the coastland during his years of boating, entered the Coast Guard Service about 50 years ago, and retired in 1939, ending over 30 years of honorable service. Then he and Mrs. Jones built a new home three miles north of Manteo. He served most of his enlistments in Nags Head station. He is one of the ten children of the late Asa Warren Jones, and Martha Crees Jones. His father was Regis ter of Deeds, Superintendent of schools, and otherwise active in the public life of Dare County some 60 years and more ago. He was born at East Lake, but has lived in Manteo most of his life. Beside Capt. Jones, the survi vors of this notable family are Mrs. Ferebee, Mrs. Nan Northam, Miss Callie Jones, and Mrs. Annie Willis. Those deceased are Mrs. Agnes Baum, Onlow, Roscoe, Clar ence and Asa Jones. Africa produces 97 of every 100 carats of diamonls mined in the world. The current annual world production of some 23 million carats would fill about 75 bushel baskets.
