C. t ..iILDREN'S home CHRISTMAS FUND DRIVE UNDER WAY The annual Christmas Fund drive of The Children’s Home Society of North Carolina began recently with a goal of $50,000 to complete its budget for the next fiscal year. I More than 18,000 tetters were •nailed December 4 to citizens 1 throughout the state telling the -.tory of the 57-year old agency. 1 The Society is the oldest and only voluntarily-supported agency in North Carolina handling adoptions □n a state-wide basis. During the past year the Society has helped 600 babies and children, 'heir natural parents and their adoptive parents. Children from every county in the state have been helped by the Society since its origination. From its beginning in 1902 when one superintendent had to perfonn ’ all the work of adoptions, the So-1 ciety has grown to a staff of train-! ed and experienced workers, cap- 1 "■ble of handling special problems of adoption. Today it costs an average of $4.- 75 a' day to care for each baby in the nursery. The nursery is equipped to accom modate about 20 babies at one time and often there are others in supervised boarding homes. The Society also assists many families in working out their problems so that children may remain with their parents. For the past nine years, the So ciety in addition to offering serv ices for babies, has had a program for older children. The agency works directly with officials in orphanages and Departments of Public Welfare in helping to pro vide early placement for children who need homes. Each incoming baby receives a complete medical examination and is given every care when it comes to the Society’s nursery. Leading doctors, lawyers and other profes sional people donate their time and services to caring for the babies and helping work out adoption de-j tails. Contributions may be mailed to The Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, 740 Chestnut Street, Gi-eensboro.
