Mr. and Mrs. Harry O’Neal, Mr. aand Mrs. Tonis Bockhart of Cincinnati visited Edgar O’Neal during the holidays and left for Louisburg Friday. Mr. O’Neal went as far as Louisburg to visit Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Perry. S. S. Jennette spent the holi days with his father, S. S. Jen nette and Mrs. Charlie Ayers left for Fort Jackson, S. C. .Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Macon Harns of Swan Quarter visited Mr. and Mrs. Gratz Credle. The tentative death toll of 1183 ' highway fatalities was described i as the “second worst in North Carolina motor history.” i j Officials closed their books on ' the grim total at midnight, De- cember 31. Persons injured and who later die plus delayed death reports will boost the final reck oning somewhat, department ana lysts said. Not since 1941 when 1289 died has the Tar Heel motor toll been greater. Reviewing the past decade fatalities year by year totaled: 989 in 1950, 1071, ’sl, 1115 in ’52, 1118 in ’53, 991 in ’54, 1165 in ’55, 1108 in '56, 1063 in ’57, 1081 in ’SB and a tentative 1183 last year.
