Mann of Engelhard announce the engage ment of their daughter, Betty Gene to Linwood Wayne McKinney, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. McKinney of Scranton. Miss Mann is a member of the Hampton High School faculty, Hampton, Virginia. Mr. McKinney is employed by the National Aero nautics and Space Administration, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. A spring wedding is planned. ENGELHARD BAPTISTS HOSTS TO FIFTH SUNDAY MEETING Engelhard Baptist Church will be host to the sth Sunday meeting sponsored by the Hyde County Ministerial Association. All Churches of the county are invited to attend this meeting January 31st Speaker for the service will be the Rev. Wilbur Presson of Eliza beth City. Mr. Presson recently completed an evangelistic preach ing mission to the Orient and Hawaii. Photographic slides of the trip will illustrate his recital of the journey. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Spencer at State College Ra leigh, and the Russell Swindells in Cary. Rev. Robert Bunly is attending the District Conference in Plym outh. Mrs. Sarah Latham of Belhaven and Mrs. Goldie Powell of New Bern visited Miss Aleph Cason. Mr. and Mrs. Gratz Spencer vis ited Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Worrell in Washington. Miss Patricia Swindell of East Carolina College visited her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Swin dell. Mr. Foster Flowers is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Carl Crumpler at Wilkinson. Mr. and Mrs. Hallett Whitley and Mrs. Nicky Paul of Pantego visited Mrs. Abram Cahoon. The Rev. Ernest Pettis, for 15 years a missionary in Korea will speak at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Swan Quarter, Friday evening at 7, o’clock. The public is invited. WEST HYDE P.T.A. PLANS PROGRAM FOR FEBRUARY 22 Meeting This Week Also Had In teresting Program By The Eighth Grade SWAN QUARTER. —The West Hyde PTA met Monday night. Mrs. Hubert Watson presided and Mrs. Bill Miller was acting secretary. The main item of business was a discussion of “Everybody’s Birth day Party” to be held February 22, 7:30 p.m. in the school audi torium. Admission 25 cents for everyone. “Everybody’s Birthday Party” is an annual money raising project, and many PTA members as well as school children have active parts. The PTA ladies deco rate the tables and make the 12 birthday ackes, the school children, directed by the teachers, put on the program. The eighth grade won the one dollar for room representation in the grades; the twelfth grade in high school. The eighth grade of West Hyde school under the direction of Mrs. Jeannette Baucom, presented the program which included an origi nal play. The opening of the program consisted of the Hymn, “Look for the Beautiful;” the Ninety Third | Psalm and prayer by Leander Mc- Kinney; song, “The Old North State;” choral reading, “The Old North State;” song, “Carolina in the Morning.” A piano solo, “Wedding of the painted Doll” by Richard O’Neal, and a play, “The Legend of Tom Dooley” which is an original play written by Georgia Carol Mitchell, Linda Harris, Rita Simmons, and Sue Gaylord. In the presentation, Georgia Carol Mitchell was narrator; Donald Cahoon was Tom Dooley; Paul Mason, the country boy; Henry Berry, Tom’s other friend; Hyman Spencer, Sheriff; Charles Reid, doctor. Jackie Jarvis, bartend er, Carlyle Watson, doctor’s grand son; Ralph Brinn, Groysen; June Midyette, Lora. The chorus which assisted the narrator with telling the story was Rita Simmons, Betty Bonner, Sue Gaylord, Clifford Swindell, Linda Harris, Janice Baynor, William Oscar Brickhouse, Charlie Mac Cahoon and Richard O’Neal. FRIENDLY BRIDGE CLUB Mrs. Lucy Smith was hostess to her bridge club at her home in Belhaven Friday night Arrange ments of camellias, ivy and japon ica were used throughout the house. Club members playing were, mes dames J. R. Brown, L. R. Smith, O. F. Walker, J. H. Lupton, W. C. Swindell, L. A. Knight, James Am brose Sr., and Sarah Latham. High score prize went to Mrs. J. H. CHILD GUIDANCE TOPIC OF GUEST SPEAKER BELHAVEN The P.T.A. of the John A. Wil kinson high school met on Wed nesday, January 20, in the audi torium with Russell Johnston pre siding. Mrs. Walter Latham of East Carolina College and Bethel was introduced by Vann Latham, program chairman. Mrs. Latham spoke on “Child Guidance”. Mrs. Latham is also teacher of social studies at Bethel High school. She is past president and present secretary of the N.C. District social studies council and a member of the N.C. representation to the personal and family living conference of the Mid Atlantic and South Atlantic states in Washington, D. C. She was ac companied to Belhaven by Mr. Latham who was introduced to the group. Charles Latham, Belhaven Boy Scout leader, announced there would be a Court of Awards at the Belhaven Community center and invited all boys over 11 years to join the movement Mr. Purvis, principal, urged sup port of basketball games. Mrs. John Boger and Mrs. E. W. Midgetto rooms won the attend ence count. Refreshments were served by the home economics de pairtment. FRIDAY, JANUARY 29, 1960 BELHAVEN MOTHERS MARCH Mrs. Vann Latham has an nounced plans for the polio drive in Belhaven. The business district will be canvassed by E. L. Voliva, Charles Latham, John Cutrell and Ed Harris. The Belhaven band will parade at 6:30 prior to the mothers house to house march, which will be supervised by the Belhaven fire department. Please leave your outside light on if you wish to do nate to this worthy cause.
