OCRACOKE NEWS
OCRACOKE, July 20. Satur
day, July 23, has been set as the
last day to register for voting in
the proposed Mosquito District
election here. The election day it
self has been fixed by the Hyde
County Commissioners for Satur
day, August 6, with special regis
tration required, registration books
to close July 23. Since the District
would bring a local tax of 25<* on
the hundred dollars, it is a live is
sue in this community. Opinions
range all the way from those who
want no tax of any kind for any
purpose, to those who propose a
tax as the only fairway to spread
out the costs of mosquito control.
Opinions also range all the way
from those who flatly beieve that
no control can be accomplished,
to those who believe that with
money and wisdom over a period
of years much can be done. As
COASTLAND TIMES goes to
press, only two days are left to
register for this election, namely
Friday and Saturday of this week.
Mrs. Neva O’Neal has posted no
tice that voters may register at
her house on Friday, July 22, 3-6
p.m., or on Saturday, July 23, 10
a.m.-6 p.m. The attempt is being
made to alert local citizens to the
fact that whether they oppose or
favor the creation of Ocracoke
Mosquito Control District, they
must register at once in order to
vote in the election.
Sportsfishermen continue to
bring in good catches of cobia
daily, but on July 18th, Andy
Green and family of Richmond,
varied the catch with a 74 lb. Tar
l pon as well as a 20 lb. cobia. It |
was caught two miles out from I
Ocracoke in Pamlico Sound with
pinfish bait after a spectacular
I fight of an hour and forty minutes
before the big ssh was brought to
gaff. Mr. and Mrs. Green and
daughter, Helen and son Jeff, were
fishing with Capt. Thurston Gas
kill in the “South Wind.” They
stayed at Wahab Village Hotel. It
was their first visit to Ocracoke,
but as Mr. Green says: “Not our
last . . . Ocracoke was recommend
ed to us by Ed Benjamin of Tow
son, Maryland . . . and we’ll be
coming back.”
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mosher and
family of Indian Head, Md , and his
mother, Mrs. Eleanor Mosher, of
Ithaca, N. Y., enjoyed a week at
the Togo Wynn cottage. The
Moshers owned a summer home
here from about 1925 to 1940,
when they were residents of Chapel
Hill. It was Mrs. Mosher’s first
return to the Island since 1940.
”1 -find many material changes of
course, but fundamentally it’s the
same fascinating and friendly
Ocracoke that I knew.”
Another “old-timer” was Mrs.
Annie Potter of Norfolk, who had
not been here for thirty or more
years. Mrs. Potter was a native
of Ocracoke, a member of the
Springer family, who at one time
owned a large tract at the south
end of the Village which continues
to be known as “Springer’s Point,”
which was the legendary hide-out
of the Pirate Blackbeard.
It was pleasing to the eye to
see Capt. Marvin W. Howard at
home for a day or two. Since he
has been “in command” of the
Ocracoke - Atlantic ferry “Sea
Level”, his home visits have been
confined to about two hours daily
when the ferry is docked at Ocra
coke. Evidently he took a few days
“furlough” to be here with Mrs.
Howard during the visit of their
son, Olin Howard, and his family,
from Roanoke Rapids. Meanwhile
Capt. Clarence Scarborough kept
the “Sea Level” on its devious
course through Core and Pamlico
Sounds. The ferry is carrying
maximum capacity daily and dur
ing “rush periods” of travel some
times cars are left behind, indi
cating that a second ferry would
be advantageous fnr summer traf
fic.
Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Parker of
Meriden, Conn., are at their sum
mer "home here, indeed they are
increasing the capacity of the
home with a large addition. Evi
dently children and grandchildren
are expected for visits.
Mrs. t Eleanor Burrus has snent
the past week with sisters in Hat
teras, but plans to come home
shortly. Meanwhile her daughter,
Mrs. Victor Grigas of Portsmouth,
Va., came here with friends on
Tuesday and visited her sisters,
Mrs. Monford Garrish and Mrs.
Herman Spencer.
Mr. and Mr. Leo Dederick of
the Recreational Planning Board
of the National Park Service, of
Washington, D. C., visited Ocra
coke recently. Supt. Gibbs was al
so down from Manteo lasst Thurs
day. The National Paric is provid
ing turn-out places along the
the Ocracoke highway so that cars
can park off the road and visitors
can walk over to the ocean beach.
There are three of these under
construction, one just north of the
Village near the first dunes, anoth
er about six miles down the Is
land near the Pony Range (this
one will give visitors hn oppor
tunity to walk over to the ocean
beach and see the remains of the
shipwreck “George Wells”, and a
third at the northern end of the
paved highway.
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel G. Jones,
I Sr., of Norfolk and family are
I here at Berkeley Manor, with their
son, Selby and little daughter, Ur-
