FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 1961 GULROCK PERSONALS Mrs. Plum Pedrick is in the Belhaven hospital. She was visited during the week end by Mr. and Mrs. Monty Green of Ocean View, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Pugh of Portsmouth were home last week. Their daughter, Mrs. Marshall Whitehurst and Karen of Norfolk were here also. Leonard Pugh, Jr., U. S. Navy, San Francisco, Calif, and his family are here for two weeks before returning to Cali fornia. Then they will be stationed in the Philippines. Alton Payne and Susie spent the week end here from Elizabeth City. Joseph Pugh has returned from Florida where he spent the winter. MorMt, W CANCER CRUSADE BEGINS ' The “Kick-Off-Meeting’’ of the Hyde County Cancer Unit was held Monday Evening in West Hyde High School. Mrs. Gilbert Tunnell, presided. Rev. Robert Bundy gave the de votional. tv, o vn-nnrt of the treasurer was of great interest Last year’s con itribu'ions were $677. The goal for the Hyde Cancer Unit for 1961 is S7OO. Mrs. R. G. Baum, the Crusade Chairman, organized the crusade for the County Unit. The crusade will begin April 16 and last through April 30. The “check-up” dinner meeting will be April 29. Contributions should be brought to Mrs. Frostie Lupton be fore 2:00 o’clock, Friday afternoon, April 28. Mrs. Bert Tyson, Area Consul ' tant, introduced the guest speaker Dr. Ray Silverthorne of Washing ton, N. C. Dr. Silverthorne brought out the following points: Through research a perfect cure may be obtained. Researcr is the key to success. The cancer $ con tributed by the people to the volun teer agent has a great four-fold purpose: 1. Research to find new cure. 2. Public education ( educating people to be alert of the dangers). 3. Professional education and 4. Service-30% of the funds expended in education. 23% of funds expend ed on service, 40% of contributions in the county come back to the county. MRS. WAHAB HOSTESS Mrs. Leigh Wahab was hostess to her bridge club 13 and invited guests Mrs. Eddie Voliva, Mrs. James Edwards, Jr. and Mrs. W. G. Ralph when she entertained at her home on Riverview Street, Bel haven. Mrs. Wahab used arrangements I of early spring flowers and camel lias to decorate the playing area. Iced bottle drinks and peanuts were served during progressions and a dessert course of ice cream, cake and coffee at the close of play. Club members playnig were, Mesdames David Ballance, Jr., Jack Leigh, C. B. Tilman, Marshall Willis, Cleve Woodward, Charles Midgette, James Griffin and H. L. Dilday. Mrs. Voliva won the high score prize, Mrs. Ballance the low and Mrs. Griffin the bingo. HATTERAS BETA CLUB PROVIDES ID TAGS The Beta Club of Cape Hatteras School is making available identi fication tags in co-operation with the Civil Defense program. The wearing of ID tags is recommended to assist in positive and rapid iden tification in case of accidents, sud den illness, a lost child, or national emergency. The tags are of stain less steel and the lettering is per mantly indented. Anyone in the area who is interested in getting one of these tags is asked to fill out a form in this manner with not over 18 leters and spaces on one line: Line 1, name, line 2, street address, route, or box num ber; line 3, city and state; line 4, telephone number and religion; line 5, medical data—allergies or diseases—or next of kin. The ID tags are of two types —the necklace type and the wrist type—and are of maximum size in order to fit every one. Completed forms along 55(5 for each wrist type tag and 50(5 fore each necklace type tag should be mailed to the Beta Club, Cape Hatteras School, Buxton, N. C.
