J VICT OR. MEEKINS
/ AN EPIDEMIC OF GIRL
\ BABIES SWEEPS COUNTRY
/ This is a ' puzzling phenomen,
\ beyond our Comprehension, and we
| don’t know any reasons to offer
I and haven’t asked any doctors, but
/ it has been repeatedly brought to
\ my attention, twice this year by
I my own children, that girt babies
/ are in vogue at this time. Just
\ about all the new babies you hear
1 of are girls. Many newly married
J people are disappointed when their
/ first child fails to be a boy. It’s
\ something in the blood that comes
j down from the days of the Old
J Hebrews of Bible times.
\ Our first two children were boys,
1 and I did not share the disappoint-
1 ment that some people fed- when
/ their first child is not a boy. Os
\ our five grandchildren, four of
I them are girls, and as I said when
/ our third child was growing up,
I little girls are mighty sweet. As a
I small child, no one gets closer into
/ your heart than a little girt. There
\ isn’t anything about who can be
J more interesting than a little boy,
J but many people have learned that
< little girls are not to be discounted.
\ Byway of the New Bern Mirror,
I one of the most captivating week-
/ lies in the state, we receive the
\ following masterpiece on the subj
) ect “WHAT IS A GIRL?”
J “Little girls are the nicest
\ things that happen to people. They
\ are bom with a little of angel-
I shine about them and though it
/ wears thin sometimes, there is al
\ ways enough left to lasso your
1 heart—even when they are seated
J in the mud, or crying temperamen
tai tears, or parading up the street
| in mother’s best clothes.
/ “A little girl can be sweeter
/ (and badder) oftener than anyone
\ else in the world. She can jitter
) around, and stomp, and make fun
-1 ny noises that frazzle your nerves,
\ yet just when you open your mouth,
\ she stands there demure with that
j special look in her eyes. A girl is
/ innocence playing in the mud and
\ Motherhood dragging a doll by the
) foot.
) “God borrows from many crea
\ tures to make a little girl. He uses
I the song of a bird, the squeal of a
/ pig, the stubbornness of a mule,
I the antics of a monkey, the spry-
I ness of a grasshopper, the curios
j ity of a cat, the speed of a gazelle,
\ the slyness of a fox, the softness
\ of a kitten, and to top it all off,
) He adds the mysterious mind of a
/ woman.
\ “A little girl likes new shoes,
) party dresses, small animals, first
) grade, noise makers, the girl next
\ door, make believe, dancing lessons,
\ ice cream, kitchens, coloring books,
I make-up, cans of water, going visit
/ ing.-tea parties, and one boy.
\ “She doesn’t care so much for
J visitors boys in general, large dogs,
j hand-me-downs, straight chairs,
\ vegetables, snow suits, or staying
\ in the front yard. Who else can
j cause you more grief, joy, irrita
/ tion satisfaction, embarassment,
\ and genuine delight?
I “She can muss up your home,
/ your hair, and your dignity—spend
\ your money, your time and your
\ temper—then just when your pa-
I tience is ready to crack, her sun
/ shine peeks through and you’ve lost
\ again. , ,
I “Yes, die is a nerve-racking
/ nuisance, just a noisy bundle of
< mischief. But when your dreams
\ tumble down and the world is a
I mess—when it seems you are P
/ ty much of a fool —she can make
\ you a king when she climbs on
I your knee and whispers, .*
I you best of all!’”
