‘Twas the morning of Christmas
and I awoke from a sleep, that had
been full of dreams of fish in the
deep. The noise that woke me was
a shot from a gun—l jumped out
of bed and started to run, to the
window to see what the commotion
could be. Bang! There was the noise
once more, it seemed to come from
Eph’s grocery store. I leaned out
the window as far as I could, and;
saw a blue truck turn ‘round by
the wood. It stopped at the Bal
lance home next door, and that
deafening noise sounded once more.
Then the truck stopped right out
front, and a little man hopped out
with a grunt. He loaded a gun—
and bang brent the blast, b£ this
time I hoped it would be his last
But then with a voice filled with
cheerful glee he yelled “Merry
Christmas” right straight at me. I
recognized “Fate” (who is a Mid
gett you know), and yelled “Merry
Christmas” so I could show, my
gratitude to the celebrant as down
the road in his truck he went, to
carry on a custom of old, an Outer]
Banks custom I’m told. So a guy
from New Jersey got a big kick,
out of seeing “Fate” Midgett play
ing “Old St Nick”.
Speckled trout are still making
surf fishing interesting when the
weather and water are favorable.
The sloughs abreast of the “cot
tages” and down Frisco way still
seem to be the “hot spots”. The
McCoys (Mr. and Mrs.), Capt. Ber
nice Ballance, Bill and Carol Dil
lon, “Es” White, Ray Miller, Ar
chie Scarborough, John Wasili,]
Edgar and “Buddy” Hooper, Fatio'
Gray, “Grocer” Conners, Clarence]
Brady, Alfred Gray and Dewey Parr
are the “die-hards” who, evidently,
will be there when the last trout
wends its way south.
Willard and Nancy Taylor are
still here, fishing when there seems
to be a chance of beaching some
thing bigger than a trout. Willard
continues to throw a 4H Hopkins
over the bars in hopes a stripped
bass will pay some attention to it
It seems the fii-st run of stripers
have passed Hatteras and are now
enjoying the warmer waters of the
Ocracoke surf where, last Satur
day, 49 big stripers were caught in
one haul. Drive carefully, Happy
New Year . . . and Good Fishin’ to
you all.
CARD OF APPRECIATION
For the many cards, flowers, let

heartfelt thanks.

N. C. TRAFFIC DEATHS
LESS THAN 20 YEARS AGO
BASED ON MILEAGES
Before the shock of Pearl Harbor
in. December 20 years ago, North
Carolinians were aghast at the
shocking highway death toll draw
ing to a close with 1941.
Despite travel restrictions impos
ed by war preparations, motorists
managed to slay each other in num
bers never achieved before nor
since. In 1941 the highway death
toll was 1289.
However, the Motor Vehicles De
partment, which came into existence
the same year, finds that despite
tremendous increases in vehicle reg
i istration and motor travel, highway
deaths are less than they were 20
years ago. On the roads now are
nearly two million vehicles, or three
times the number in 1941. They are
driven about three times the dis
|tance each year as their counter
parts two decades ago. And they
go much faster. Yet, vehicle depart
ment statisticians who’ve studied
the situation issue a careful pre
diction that 1961 road deaths will
come to 1223, or five per cent less
than the grisly toll of 1941.
The state calculates highway kill
ings on a formula to relate the
number of deaths to motor vehicle
miles. That is, projecting each fa
| tality into one hundred million mo
tor vehicle miles of travel. For last
year this figure was 6.5, meaning a
statistical six and a half persons
i killed for each one hundred million
miles of motoring. And such com
ing and going last year was estima
ted (from gasoline sales) at nearly
19 billion miles. By contrast the

1941 mileage death rate was well
over 17, proving that for miles
driven motoring is much safer to
day than it was 20 years ago.
In fact if the 1941 mileage death
rate were made applicable to the
current year. December would have
378 deaths and 1961 would close
with 3500 highway fatalities instead
of the estimated 1223.
Motor Vehicles Commissioner Ed
ward Scheidt says these figures are
of real significance.
“They mean,” he said, "that as
driving mileage increases the death
rate must be lowered even more,
otherwise the total number of peo
ple killed will not be reduced. This
is the real challenge for 1962.”
