L WINDLEY, Representative—Talephon* WH 3-3061 BELHAVEN CHAMBER BANQUET FEBRUARY 28 The Belhaven Community Cham ber of Commerce will hold their an nual banquet at the River Forest Manor on Wednesday evening, Feb ruary 28, according to Axson Smith, president. The Belhaven Citizen of the Year Award will be presented at this banquet. Nominations for Citizen of the year may be made by the public and should be made by letter addressed to “The Belhaven Chamber of Com merce: Citizen of the Year Award Chairman”. The following committees have been appointed to plan for the Ban quet; program—J. H. Purvis, Otis Johnston and Delma Tolan; tickets —Archie Thomas, chairman, H. L. IKlday and D. A. Rouse. A nomi nating committee to name four new directors to take office this year is composed of Vann Latham, chairman. D. A. Rouse and Barney Cuthrell. Much interest has been shown throughout the area in previous years in the Citizenship Award, and the Chamber welcomes nomi nations. Last Year Mrs. R. D. (Mary King) Mitchell received the award. Mrs. Mitchell was the first woman to do so since the practice was begun. Lets have your nomi nations early so the committee will bava sufficient time to choose the recipient of the award. BELHAVEN SPLITS TWIN BILL WITH BATH The Bulldogs of John A. Wilkin son High School defeated Bath’s Pirates, 66-51 in a hard-fought game Tuesday night, bringing their county conference mark to 2-1 and their overall record to 7-3 for the season. In the preliminary, Bath’s unde feated girls marched to their 12th straight victory in a 58-30 triumph. The Bath junior varsity boys gain ed a 38-31 victory in their game. Sandra Cox, the leading scorer in the county in the girls division of play, hit for 26 points in leading Hath to a 58-30 victory. She was followed by Anna Kay Douglas w€th 12 and Linda Waters 10 while game Woolard had seven, Rachel Tankard three and Kathy Slade played forward but did not score. Guards for Bath were Judy Sul livan, Lynda Oden, and Clara Turn age, along with Tetterton, Tuten, Chrism on, Lucy Woolard and Boyd. Glen Bateman led the Belhaven scorers with 17 points, followed by Becky Fortescue with eight and Betsy Burbage two; Claudia Tay lor had two and Libby Fussell one. Other forwards not scoring were Linda Douglas and Mary Lee Hoff. Starting for Belhaven as guards were Mary Etta Smith, Kathy Hioff and Hook Baum; others were Jackie Wilkinson and Deb Younce. Belhaven girls are now 0-3 in county play and 2-7 for the season. Bath’s Jayvees won by a 38-31 ecore with Ted Brooks hitting for 26 points, followed by J. Boyd with one, W. Black three, R. Godley four and T. Pace four. For Belhaven’s juniors Skipper Edwards had 16, Bryan Ashford four, Ed VoEva four, Tommy Moore five and Frankie Calfee two. The Belhaven boys jumped into an early lead, hitting on their first five attempts from the floor. The game then went nip-and-tuck for a few minutes as Bath narrowed the lead to three points, but the Bulldogs rallied for a 10 point margin at one point and took a 17-11 lead at the end of the first. In the second period the Bull dogs continued to build the lead and held a 31-23 advantage at the half. The Bulldogs hit on 12 of 23 attempts in the first half, enjoying a goodnight in the shooting depart ment. They wound up the game by hitting on 40 percent of their shots. The Bulldogs continued to pull atway in the second half, on the fast break mainly, Nelson and D. Everette led the defensive play for the Pirates, while Scooter Griffin of the Bulldogs, who was playing his final game because of scholastic difficulties, grabbed 14 rebounds on both offense and defense. Rodney Gaylord and Philip Sher man also shared defensive honors for the Bulldogs. Griffin hit on eight of 12 shots from the floor and helped to propel the Bulldogs into their lead as he scored 10 of the first 14 points by the Bulldogs. AURORA GETS WIN OVER BELHAVEN The Aurora Trojans climaxed homecoming activities on Friday night with a pair of wins over visit ing Belhaven and the crowning of Carolyn Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Allen as homecoming queen. The Trojan boys came from be hind in the fourth period to over take the Bulldogs for a 57-52 vic tory and throw the county race into a two-way tie for first with Pante go- Belhaven’s boys led all the way up until about two minutes had elapsed in the fourth period. The Bulldogs led by 25-24 at the half. Aurora caught up early in the fourth frame and went ahead to stay as Belhaven went cold and was missing its shots. Audrey Noble fouled out for the Bulldogs in the fourth period and this may have hurt the Bulldog cause. Larry Brinn led the Trojans in the scoring department with 21 points and played both a good floor game and was outstanding on both blackboards. Coach Callwell Hus ton pointed to the fine work being done by Gerry Edwards in the last two games. He scored two points and along with Floyd Peed and Jimmie Rice did a good job as re serves. Peed hit three straight bas kets when they > were needed most, and Rice was outstanding on the rebounding. The game was nip-and-tuck in the first three quarters. Belhaven took the lead 15-14 in the first and led by the single point at the half and held a 47-45 lead at the end of the third period. It was then that Aurora surged for the lead after about two minutes had gone by in the final frame. Scoring for the Bulldogs were Rodney Gaylord with 13, Johnny Cox 13, Philip Sherman 11, Audrey Noble 10, Doug Clark three and Howard Riddick two David Kil patrick also played but did not score. Scoring for the Trojans were Broome with three, Larry Brinn 21, Springer Johnson two, Ben Thompson 13, Gerry Edwards 10, Floyd Peed six and Jimmy Rice two. Scoring for the Aurora Trojan nettes were Lou Rowe with nine, Betty Berry 12, Darnel! Lewis 13, Joan Cayton two, Joyce Jones four, Jane Smith one also playing at forward but not scoring were Lois Lewis, Maggie Beth Godley, Rosalie Brins on a guard got two points. Starting for Aurora as guards were Beth Bonner, Dianne 11l and Tappy Paul along with Rosaline Brinson, Dean Potter, Carlyle Cay ton, Phyliss Cratch and Martha Mullen. The Aurora girls now have a 10-5 overall and are 3-2 in the county race. Scoring for Belhaven were Becky Fortescue with seven, Glen Bate man 11, Claudia Taylor three, Bet sy Burbage with two, Linda Doug las did not score along with Mary Hoff and Libby Fussell.
