/ Tawe Two THE HYPE COUNTY HERALD. SWAN QUARTER, N. C, THE HYDE COUNTY HERALD PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY AT SWAN QUARTER, NORTH CAROLINA, BY TIMES PRINTING CO., Inc. THOS. E. SPENCER Editor A Weekly Newspaper Covering the News of the Richest Agricultural County in the Foremost Historical and Recreational Area of North Carolina Entered as Second Class Matter at the Postoffice, Swan Quarter, N. C. Subscription Rates: One Year $2; Six Months $1; Three Months 60c. Vol. VII Thursday, December 6, 1945 No. 13 COLLARDS AND COMMONSENSE Depend on it most every time, the old folks had found out most everything worth knowing. Now and' then we find a new wrinkle worth while, but our forefathers had some thing about as good. Their knowledge was the proven pro duct of the centuries, things that had proved their merit, the result of tedious trial and* dostl^' erVor. Now we see elswhere in this newspaper an article sent out by the State Agricultural Extension Service which extols the virtues of collards. Collards are known to all of us as a hardy vegetable that thrives well in winter arid rfe' famous after frost, for cold weather eating, when well-boiled with fine pork; and which has a delectable drink as a by-product known as “pot-likker.” ' ■ ■ So we see how the old folks got their start as babies. They didn’t have oranges but they had collards and pot-likker. They didn’t have much milk but now we are told collards werej pust as nourishing. If every family did its best to grow a garden full of col lards in winter, we would be better off in more ways than one. Dawn Over Death THURSDAY, DEC. 6, 1945 Manteo Personals Z.
