Pag* 18-THE NEWS-S«pt«mb«r, 1982 Charlotte Delegation (Left to right) Richard A. Klein, Shimon Peres and Jack Freedman. He encouraged the Federa tions present to help in a special fund-raising effort this fall to offset the ex penses Israel has faced in the war, now over $1 billion. Because of the war effort, Israel has far less money for social programs, such as resettlement. Thus American dollars will help make up the deficit in the social programs. Richard Klein presented copies of “The Jews of Charlotte” by Morris Speiz- man to Mr. Peres, Robert Loup, National UJA chair man, and Jack Freedman, Southeast Region UJA chairman. Mr. Loup also addressed the group telling them about some of his personal ex periences on three recent missions to Israel and Lebanon. The Charlotte delegation also met with UJA leaders to discuss bringing high- ranking UJA and Israeli leaders to Charlotte for a one-day “fly-in.” The fly-in concept, originated by Mr. Loup, is a massive campaign to do major solicitations throughout the U.S. in short order. The Charlotte group returned home late that evening prepared to share with the community at up coming meetings the in formation that was obtained in Atlanta. As a result, at best, all we know are unconnected bits of information about ourselves as Jews. Most of us did not get the kind of Jewish education either at home or at Temple which provided even the most basic in formation we need when dealing with questions from our children or our neighbors or between ourselves. And, when we feel uncomfortable, we stay away from Friday evening services, adult education meetings and lectures, etc. After all, who wants to run the risk of looking ignorant and feeling embarassed. Now, after more than a year of work, a group of volunteers have come up with a plan toward solving this terrible dilem ma. Their plan is simple. For five Thursdays, beginning Oc tober 21, this group of volunteers will hold an Institute of Jewish Studies cosponsored by all the Jewish institutions and organizations in the community. The following schedule outlines the variety of classes to be offered with an emphasis on meeting the needs of those who never got a Jewish educa tion as well as offerings for those who did. The sessions will be held on October 21, 28, November 4,11 and 18 at Temple Beth El (future institutes will be held at other institutions). The registration fee is $10 per person for one or two classes per evening. On Tuesday evening, November 30 at Spirit Square, a concert by “Megmama” a performing duo who sound like Simon and Garfunkle and who specialize in their own music based on American Jewish life, will be held.
