HJIton that "at a time when B'nai B’rith Women were pioneering in efforts to achieve equality for women, in an era when women of spin tare re&chmgr for gpreater vistas of personal self- fulfillment, Barbara Walters, a larger-than-life figure, and an inspiration to millions of women, proved it could be done." The feeling of being with 2.000 men and women who are committed Jews, know ledgeable people and effective lobbyist is one of comraderie, family and a heightened awareness of what our respon sibilities are as American Jews. Monday night SAFAM per formed for 2V4 hours. One had the option of sitting and listen ing to this Jewish rock g^oup whose songs dealt with Jewish issues. But one couldn’t sit; 2.000 brothers and sisters danced, hugged and swayed to each new piece. The feeling in the ballroom was one of strong identification with our Jewisli heritage and a tremendous sense of belonging. We were 2,000 strong and we were heard. We addressed major issues concerning world Jewry. We shared ideas and ideals. We are 14 from Charlotte who want to share with you the issues and ideals we must all strive for. • You don't need a law degree! You don’t need a P.H. D. In political science! AU you need is a commitment, a voice, and a place to be heard. The con ference in Washington was designed to give us just that., Two thousand Jews gathered together with one focus, to become informed and involved with the issues important to Jews in America. Knowledge of the issues was shared easi ly throughout the many workshops and plenaries hosted by some of the most respected people in American politics and Israel. Senators, congressman, White House personnel, The Ambassador from Israel and even the Presi dent of the United States came to share with us alon^ with two thousand young; Jewish leaders from conn* muni ties all over the country. Apprehension was quickly replaced by the realization that as American Jews we do have a voice and it must be heard. We did not go to debate but to educate. From there we had an appointment with Senator Jessie Helms. Navigating the labyrinth of tunnels and the underground subway under the Capitol building to the Senate offices only added to the excitement. Our group was simply a delegation of young Jewish leaders with something to say and our representatives were there to listen. We met with Senator Helms at the Agricultural Committee con ference room where we sat at a table bearing the name plates of several of those senators that we had listened to and met with the day before. As a delegation of twenty American Jews from North Carolina, committed to the State of Israel we inform ed our Senator where we stood on the issues. I realized then that I was a LOBBYIST. The Capitol is not a concrete monu ment to politics it is a place where our representatives make the decisions that effect us all. We do belong there, we can be heard. ^l51SlSlfllSIS15l51Sl5iai?i2rjjlSl5l5lSl5l5l5lSlSlSlSlS®SM51&15®5l5L?J^u^.5^^ imperial pniNTiNa products Specialists In Raised Printing Stationery — Business Cards Wedding — Bar Mitzvah Invitations Business & Social Announcements APRIL 1984 Club 23 Meeting BE Lodge Arthur Goodman Party Charlotte Chapter BBW Installation luncheon JCC Passover Workshop JCC Evening Drama Performance JCC Bicycle Rally Hadassah Board Meeting Chai Meeting JCC Board Meeting Federation Executive Committee Charlotte Chapter BBW Board Meeting Ha Lailah BBW Board Meeting Jewish Social Services Meeting Club 46 Meeting Hadassah Meeting Hebrew Academy Board Meeting ORT Meeting BB Lodge Meeting BB Lodge Installation Brunch JCC Membership Meeting Federation Women’s Division Avodah Council Meeting USY Service JCC Cabaret Yom Ha Shoa - Holocaust Remembrance Service Chai Meeting If you want your events on community calendar contact Vicki Hopkins at 554-1324.
