Page 14-THE NEWS-December, 1984 Jewish Lexicon - UAHC Justice - Not Charity We Jews do not give “chari ty.” Rather, we perform an act of justice or righteousness, and the word for it in the Jewish vocabulary is tsedakah. In the Jewish tradi tion, the poor and the unfor tunate (like widows, orphans and the stranger in our midst) have the right — the legal right in Jewish law — to food, clothing £md shelter. It is the obligation of every Jew to give tsedakah, that is, to perform an act of justice by giving help, not out of a momentary whim or sudden philanthropic impulse, but out of religious duty. Former President Carter once said, “Life is sometimes unfair.” It certainly is. Indeed, precisely because life is unfair, the Jewish sages of 2,000 yeeirs ago and more made the giving of tsedakah obligatory, even for the person receiving tsedakah. Tsedakah is connected with other Hebrew words in our LARGE NIKON SELECTION IN STOCK For high-performance in a subcompact, get behind the new Nikon One-Touch (L35AF). it offers easy handling. According to Jewish legend, there are 36 hidden tsadikim or righteous persons in every generation who sus tain the world. Giving tsedakah is never a handout. It is the right thing for a Jew to do because tsedek, justice, demands it of us. When they’re this young, they are egocentric, but we teach them about their audience anyway, as it allows them a reading experience as weU.” The Hebrew Academy is very fortunate to have Mrs. Tarleton on its staff, keeping up with the most beneficial ways for its children to learn. “I believe this is an extremely valuable approach to teaching spelling, writing and reading,” Lynne added. “The children gain confidence in themselves by acquiring a command of the language which they are at tempting to master daily.” On The Issues (Continued from Page 3) Also, I am including a copy of the memo that has been sent to all high school principals in the system and a photo copy of the calendar of the South Mecklenburg High School newspaper. “I appreciate your interest and assistance in this matter.” The office of the Superinten dent of schools sent us a copy of the following memorandum; TO: All High School Princi pals SUBJECT: Young Life “We need for you to be aware of the fact that Young Life leaders are apparently coming on some of our cam puses in 'order to recruit students. Young Life, you will recall, is a religious organiza tion which must operate out side the regular school day. The recruitment of students during the school day (in the cafeteria or in other locations on campus) is not appropriate and is in conflict with our established procedures. “Please alert your staff to inform you if this happens so that you can talk with the leader to be sure he/she understands the system’s position in the matter.”
