Page 6-THE NEWS-December, 1984 Mighty Mike A Friend In Deed Sometime three, often five mornings a week, Mike Malkin drives to the Armstrong House and climbs the stairs to the Federation offices. “What do you have today?” he asks with his perpetual soft, pleasant smile. The answer can be anything from phone calling to mailing 2000 copies of something. Mike is a volunteer of incredible dedica tion. He first walked into the Federation some 2V2 years ago. He explained that he had been volunteering with a number of organizations since his retirement several years before. “Now,” he said, “I want to give as much time as possible to my own Jewish community, and I’ve picked the Federation. So, let’s get to work; I’m g^e for anything.” Mike Malkin is no newcomer to Jewish conmiunal work. His background in North Carolina goes back to the days after World War II when he directed the USO program in the state for the Jewish Welfare Board (JWB is also the national organization for JCCs). As good as his first words, Yiddish Vinlcl The Charlotte Yiddish In stitute’s Yiddish Vinkl will meet on Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m., at Temple Beth El. It is open to anyone interested in learning Yiddish. There are five classes offered: Two classes for begin ners (onfeingers) with Baila Pransky and Sholom Goozner; two for intermediates (mittel) with Raizel Luski and Gedalia Ackerman; and one for the ad vanced (go kenners) with Avram Luski. The group meets monthly; for more information call Baila Pransky, 366-5564. Mike Malkin working diligently at the Federation office. Mike is willing to tackle any task. Members of the Board or committees have heard his voice reminding them of meetings and events. Cam paign workers, with long lists of prospects to call, have breathed a sigh of relief because Mike spent hours . looking up and writing down Shaffer & Max, Inc. Recently he ac cepted the job of correcting, by hand, 2000 copies of an up coming mailer. It means cross ing out three sets of figures and writing in three correct figures on each copy. That’s 6000 cross-outs and 6000 numbers to write in. “I feel a little like a schoolboy who is being punished,” said Mike. “You know, being told by the teacher to write 500 times ‘I won’t pull Susy’s pigtails smy more’.” Mike and his lovely wife, Lil, live quite a distance from the Federation, and he has had to get used to three different commutes as the offices mov ed from the old JCC to H&S Lumber to the Armstrong House, but when he says 9:30 a.m., you can set your watch by his arrival. Mike keeps a close eye on the Project work going on beneath the windows of the Armstrong House. If he’s wondering about a spot for him in the new building, he need wonder no more.
