Page 6-THE NEWS-October, 1985 This That Dr. Byron Wilkenfeld has been named clinical director for the adolescent chemical dependency program at Conmiunity Psychiatric Centers Cedar Spring Hospital, Pineville. Paul Simon has been appointed to the President’s Retail Ad visory Council. The Council consists of a group of retailers throughout the Carolinas and Virginia who will attend the MAC Markets in Charlotte and evaluate conditions and exhibits. Richard Bober participated in the U.S. Masters National Long Course Swimming Championships at Brown University in Pro vidence, R.I., Aug. 17-19. Richard placed second in the 50, 100, and 200 meter backstrokes, third in the 200 and 400 meter freestyles and fourth in the 100 meter freestyle. Masters swimming is a competitive age group swim program for adults 25 years of age and over. Each age group is divided into 5 year brackets; Richard swims in the 30-34 age group. Howard Winokuer and Alexis Stein will attend the first inter national symposium on grief and bereavement in Jerusalem in November. Winokuer, president of “To Life,” and Stein, ex ecutive director, will spend two weeks there. Winokuer seiid he has been notified that the bereavement program which he began and incorporated here in 1979 has been accepted for presentation at the symposium. Israel was chosen as the site of the conference because of the bereavement people there have suffered. Seven young Charlotte players — the most ever for the city — made the Top 50 in their age categories in the U.S. Chess Federation’s September listing of top-rated chess players. Among them are Rafi Goldberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Goldberg, a rising 6th grader at First Ward Elementary School, 12th in the 9-10 age group; Aviv Sheffi, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Sheffi, who attended First Ward last year £ind now has returned to Israel, 18th in the 9-10 group; Scott Kaufmann, son' of Mr. £ind Mrs. Stephen Kaufmguin, now at McClintock Junior High, 46th in the 11-12 group; Michael Fox, son of Dr. and Mrs. Leonard Fox, a student at Providence Day School, 34th in the 6-8 group. Larry Goldberg is president of and coach with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Scholastic Chess Association. Faye (Mrs. Robert) Seigel has been awsirded a Ginter Fellowship at Queens College. Laurie Behar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Behar, is one of five Mecklenburg students who were awarded the first William Tasse Alexander Scholarships by the Foundation For The Carolinas. The merit scholeu-ships range from $1,000 to $3,500. Laurie is a student at Appalachian State University, where she also was named to the spring semester dean’s list. Also making the dean’s list at Appalachian is her brother, Eric Scott Behar. Other students listed on the dean’s list there are Shelly Schwartz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Schwartz, and Naomi Spltzer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Spitzer. Named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at N.C. State U. with a straight “A” average is Jeffrey Estroff, son of Mr. Unique! Fun! Relaxing! State is Jonathan Bograd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bograd. Julie Karen Simon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Simon, has been named to the spring semester honor roll at East Carolina U. with a B average. Gary Lerner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lerner, was awarded an internship with the Carter Center of Emory University. The Carter Center, founded by Emory U. in 1982, addresses issues of domestic and international policy. Fifty-nine students from public and private schools in Mecklenburg County are semifinalists for National Merit Awards. Among them are: Matthew Kodsi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kodsi, and Mark Lewis, son of Mrs. Betsy Lewis, both seniors at East Mecklenburg High School (Mark also attended Governor’s School this summer); Stephanie Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Davis, a senior at South Mecklenburg High. Also listed as a Merit Schol£u*ship semi-finalist is Zach Coleman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Coleman, who is one of 65 students, one-third of the senior class, at N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, Durham, who made this honor. Hope you all become finalists!
