Adopted Family
Last year Adrienne
Rosenberg alerted Ha Lailah
members of a very special
family in need. The young
mother and son were
“adopted” by Ha Lailah
last year during Chanukah
and we have given food and
clothing to them. Adrienne
keeps us up to date on how
they are doing. The mother
has stressed the point that she
wants nothing for herself on
ly for her child. This has been
a very rewarding project for
Ha Lailah. When this family is
able to function alone we hope
to keep the project going by
“adopting” another family. If
anyone is interested in more
information or would like to
make a donation please con
tact Penny Eisenberg,
847-4037.

Temple Beth El invites all
community youth children to
a Shabbat service and lun
cheon to be held on Saturday,
January 18, from 11 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. The service is
designed for children of
preschool to kindergarten age
but any other interested
children may also attend.
There will also be a story.
It was an offhand conunent,
a subtle expression of my
frustration, but Helene
Nathanson picked up on it and
set the wheels in motion.
After choosing Judaism two
years ago, I have been trying
to continue my Jewish educa
tion by reading, attending
temple, participating in
classes and slowly getting in
volved in the Jewish communi
ty. Although these activities
are providing a wealth of infor
mation, I still feel very inade
quate in my day to day
“Jewishness” and in par-
ticulsir, the rituals that take
place in the home.
Books are great to tell one
“how to do,” but until one sees
something done, there is
always the doubt that you are
not performing it like
“everybody else”. Shabbat
was a perfect example.
This is where Helene entered
the picture. Together with
Shirley Levine, they arranged
a Shabbat dinner for a Tues
day night in November.
Shirley was kind enough to
open her home and provide a
beautiful meal to a group of
seven women who were in
terested in experiencing a
“typical” Friday night Shab
bat. Some of us had chosen
Judaism, some were born
Jewish and wanted to be
songs and Shabbat games.
This is a wonderful opportuni
ty for our young children to
learn to enjoy participating in
a Shabbat service.

refreshed on rituals, and some
of us were not Jewish but in
terested in learning about
Judaism.
The dining room table was
beautifully set and you could
tell it was a special night. Our
dinner was delicious and in
cluded roast chicken, matzah
ball soup and kugel.
We lit the Shabbat candles,
said the blessing, recited kid-
dush and brucha over the
challah. Each of us was pro
vided a Book of Songs and
Blessings by the United
Jewish Appeal so we could all
actively participate.
During dinner, Shirley and
Helene gave us ideas on how
they make Shabbat special for
their families but stressed how
each person needs to create a
Temple Israel is offering a
comprehensive course, open to
the entire Jewish community,
concerning many aspects of
creating a Jewish home. We
level of observance with which
their own family will be com
fortable. After saying the
g^ace after the meal and at
tempting a few Hebrew songs,
it was time for the evening to
end. As it turned out, the
rituals I had been performing
were not far off base but I
learned many more that I want
to incorporate into our fam
ily’s Friday night Shabbat.
iSvo of my favorites are saying
a blessing over your children
and having an extra Sabbath
candle for each child.
Not only was this class
educational but a spirit of
community was felt as well.
The mutual interest, the ex
change of ideas and the learn
ing provided a sense of the
essence of Shabbat.
will read Blu Greenberg’s How
To Run A Traditional Jewish
Home and hear guest speakers
at each session. This course
should be especially helpful for
people who have chosen to be
Jewish and those with little or
no Jewish background.
Classes will meet on the
fourth Wednesday of each
month. The first class is
January 29, 7:30 p.m. at Tem
ple Israel. Books and a course
outline will be distributed at
that time. You may choose to
attend all sessions, or only
those of particular interest to
you.
The first topic for discussion
will be “The Process of Feeling
More Jewish.” Speakers will
be Carol Waldman and
Marlene Fuerstman, two
women active in the Jewish
community, who converted to
Judaism.
Other topics to be address
ed in future classes include:
Holidays, customs, Shabbat,
traditions, cooking, children’s
Jewish experience, a Jewish
home library, Jewish music.
